Since I've been asked lots of times to do tutorials.. here you have one
I hope it will help you guys somehow with digital impressionism. The program used was Photoshop CS3 Extended so the explanations are based on it. Here you have the illustration of which I've done the tutorial:

thanks so much for this! ive always had trouble with backgrounds in relation to characters, but your words make perfect sense (treating the character like the background). i will try out this technique on my next works.. i love the quality of living atmosphere in your work! one question though, how do you keep loose on detailed areas like the face? sometimes i refine it too much and it looks awkward

hmmm ... I guess it's because of the brushes since they're textured.. and trying not to use a smogde or soft brush.
