Description
Crystal was surprised. She did not like being surprised. When Crystal cast her spell, Callie should have been turned into a plastic figurine along with the rest of her friends. The fact that Callie was standing there begging for her life, still very much flesh and blood, was the source of Crystal’s surprise.
Crystal was the Dungeon Master. While mapping out a campaign, she foresaw every possible move that players might make, and planned for every eventuality that could conceivably result from their actions. The fact that she had not foreseen this outcome was embarrassing as well as surprising. She did not like being embarrassed, either.
“Please, Crystal!” Callie cried out in terror. “Please don’t turn me into a figurine!”
Crystal had no idea why Callie had not been transformed, but that was the last thing she wanted Callie to know. She had to think fast. “I will spare you,” she pronounced, trying to sound magnanimous, “provided you swear upon your immortal soul to serve me.” That was a lie, of course.
"I swear!" Callie blurted out hastily, clearly too terrified to think through what exactly she was committing herself to.
Witnessing magic for the first time had that effect on people.
