Note: this is just how the hair structure works based upon my current skill level and understanding. If i'm mistaken feel free to point out corrections.

Okay guys so this is a little tricky. I actually didn't know how to put into words how hair works so I'll give it my best shot.

Basically the overall shape of your hair is defined by one pivotal thing. THE HAIRLINE. Although hair grows all over your head, the major strands that define its shape all derive from your hair line.
Lets look at Sasuke from the anime/manga "Naruto" for example. (mainly part 1) Sasuke's hair style is the way it is because his hairline grows straight down the middle of his forehead. hence the arches branching in different directions. :v

Once you decide where the hairline is on your character, you can better determine what hair style to give him or her.

Now on to the actual styles.

Just like everything else in our world, Hair is affected by gravity. Though there are some variables to take into consideration like gel and hairspray but I won't go too much into that.

That being said, hair can also be naturally wavy,curly, or straight cause of genetics. It doesn't always need products.

The key here is too look at reference. Don't be shy (even if your a guy) to look through magazines for hairstyles. You don't even have to copy it exactly. Just add your own personal flair to it.

For wavy hair just follow a light wave motion going down the head. not too straight, but not curly either. Curly hair is great cause it gives off a "Fun" vibe from the character. get crazy with those swirls WHILE keeping in mind to not break the overall design by over doing it. Straight hair is probably the easiest. The bangs can literally be ANY style you want., tucked behind the ear like Tifa, of cut into a princess style like Hinata. that's the only thing you need to worry about. the rest of the hair just drops straight down.

Something to keep in mind is that hairstyles can also add buffs to a characters personality. A shy, introverted girl isnt going to have a fashion model hair-do that attracts attention. they probably would have shorter hair in a plain but cute style to not be too flashy.

I prefer that actually. short hair on girls is a plus for me :3
