Description
Finally! After more than a year, I finally was able to force myself to finish this. I can't say I'm 100% satisfied with how it looks, but I really wanted to just finish it so I can mentally free myself and move on to a different project. If I keep editing and modifying it, it will probably never get finished. I'll just have to apply everything I learned while making this to my next projects.I used paint tool sai 2 on my surface pro 2.
Self critique:
1. I know, I know. The faces could use some improvement (or actually a lot). They were actually the last parts I was working on, and what kept me from finishing this piece. I redid the faces at least 3 times, but it just wouldn't come out right. I guess I just need to practice more on faces, but not on this one anymore.
2. The background could be more, uhm, interesting. It's either you do an abstract background or an amazing detailed background. This one seems to be in between. It tried to be detailed but then I got lazy and settled on basically just rectangles and other basic shapes. The grass and the road are also flat as hell. Backgrounds are never really my strong area (actually, none are) but I really want to give more details to the background next time. I want backgrounds that can pretty much stand on their own like landscape paintings.
3. The bow and guns are not really realistic. I looked up some references but I just used them to give myself some ideas on how they generally look. I didn't really copy the actual parts and details of the bow and gun. That's laziness on my part (again), so I'm sorry.
4. I actually learned a lot about color theory and combining colors, which ones go together better, etc. during the course of this piece. Unfortunately, I've already set the base colors before I learned those things, and I couldn't be bothered to adjust or change them. Or maybe I just couldn't properly apply in practice what I learned in theory. The colors don't look too bad, but they certainly can look better.
I'm really happy with this piece, despite all those criticisms I gave myself. I'm just happy to know that I've finished a piece and I have something to look back on in the future. This is the most detailed, most time-consuming drawing project I ever embarked on, so finishing it is a big achievement. It may not have looked as grand as I imagined it to be, but at least it's here and I can pat myself on the back, and move on to another project. Also, I finally got my money's worth on my Surface Pro 2. I bought it specifically as a drawing tablet (that can also do laptop stuff), but until now I haven't really completed a big drawing project on it. No more buyer's remorse for me.
