The actor who played Mr. Roper was Norman Fell. He was a well known character actor - he played an ambitious police officer who is working for Robert Vaughan's interests (against the honor of the Police Department at times) in Steve McQueen's "Bullitt", and the state police detective who is trying to get to the bottom of the bloody bank heist (to the derision of a racist John Vernon, the bank's owner) in "Charley Varick".
