After he and his housemate, Milo, were augmented, they lived with their guardians in the small town of Callahan. "Augmented" is the term used when animals are treated with a serum to enhance their brain functions so they think and feel on a near-human level. When the Order of Natural Law took control, they started to reclaim all augmented animals to have them reverted, seeing this form of technology as a violation against nature. Max and Milo's guardians were forced to comply while Max protested. Milo explained that he never felt comfortable as a highly intelligent cat and agreed to turn himself in. Hurt by Milo's betrayal, Max abandoned his family but returned to his old home once the family had left.
