That is a pretty sweet rendition of Elizabeth I. Is the oceany part her dress?

Not part of it, more like an illusion

Well yeah. I got that it wasn't really there. It's just kinda hard to make out that it's a dress.
Still nice though.

You recognise the dress? Where from ? It's completelt fabricated by me, only loosely based on tudor clothing of the period...
[link] <-- a WIP so you can see how the dress was constructed.

Maybe it just reminds me a lot of the one from my history book. It had a big ruff like that and all! If I could find that picture, I'd show you...sadly though, I can never find it on the internet when I go searching. Trust me, though, when I saw your picture, that picture of Elizabeth from my text book popped right into my head.

Hehe well she is pictures in portraiture with big dresses, and ruffs, and bearing the rainbow of her reign - so it is not unlikely, but I did not use a single reference is what I meant, I used many.

Ah, I get you. Still, it turned out very similar to that portrait... so similar that I almost had a history attack. How you do it is beyond me (even after seeing how you did it with the WIP!).

Awesome! I was really amazed when I saw all the work it took to make such a marvelous piece of art!
From some books and the internet I found out that Queen Elizabeth was thought to be a witch so at first when I saw this picture I thought she was "scrying" to see Sir Francis Drake at his work.

Tal-genn
One of my favourites by you, I love this technique so much, I'll have to try it one day.
And what was that about your crooked finger? Your finger is fine.

Thanks!
But my middle finger's end phalanges (i think its called that, don't know, the end segment tad-difer biex niftehmu) goes off at an angle to the side, in both hands. Apparently my great granny had the same crookedness, and my great uncle does cause I saw it

I've been examining my fingers for the past two minutes, and it had to take my sister to make me understand...I'm such an ignoramus sometimes xD
Still, it doesn't really show, not in the way your hands are. It wouldn't have crossed my mind hadn't you mentioned it.

meluseena In reply to 51stnereid [2008-07-14 20:33:15 +0000 UTC]
haha it's ok
It doesn't bother me so much really, it's just that everytime I use my own hands as model, they always show to me as 'mine' and are recognisable Like on the Sqaq L-Infern covers haha you may see my hands.

51stnereid In reply to meluseena [2008-07-15 07:43:36 +0000 UTC]
They're your hands?
o__O Cool!
I'd spent ages looking at the hands, saying "Why can't I draw hands like this?!" Of course, back then I had no idea of digital collage.
That book has been at me (well, my sister's, but anyway) for a year now and I'm still halfway through it xD Which is a pity, 'cause it's a really good book (man, finally something different in Maltese, instead of the usual "Hey, a cave! Let's explore it!").

meluseena In reply to 51stnereid [2008-07-15 09:33:18 +0000 UTC]
Haha! I love your description of maltese books
Well my own book in Maltese is coming out in November You should come to the launch and I will sign you one!
It's not about caves ara, tinkwetax
And hehe yes they are my hands or my husbands (miskin dejjem ikollu jippozali) and in one, the fish thing I think, there are also my arms in a cupped-hand position, and I also always recognise my arms cause I have a sort of curve in the flesh (also known as fat imma u iwa let's call it a curve haha)
I used to hate drawing hands but got into it some years ago, the trick is to use references over and over till you get the hang of it, and try to think of them dimensionally, as geometric 3-D shapes

You've written a book in Maltese? Oh goody, let me know where you'll be!
Maaa, caves and some treasure...WE KNOW.
Curve in the flesh xDD Hahaha, I love that! I have a few *cough* of those, lol.
Yeah, it's true. The problem is getting all the details and folds without making the hand seem wrinkled

meluseena In reply to 51stnereid [2008-07-15 15:31:08 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, fold in the hands are a pain.
Another good thing to do is observe other artists' manner of interpeting fingers, especially comic artists - they really simplify structure, it helps to understand how to simplify a hand shape so then you can build on it. Start first with the basic shapes and cylinders of fingers/hands then move on and make the wrinkles after.

To me, idea is most important, then comes technique - and technique is important only cause the more brilliant it is, the more people will look at your idea.
