Good Lord, What have I done!So, I know some people have drawn Crocomire pictures similar to this before but I don't think anybody has ever drawn the part where his crumbling skeleton breaks through the wall. That scene in Super Metroid was always one of my favorites, a very memorable sequence in a game full of very memorable sequences. I wanted it to look like his melting skin was cooling and partially hardening to his bones, nasty...
I always felt a little sorry after Crocomire died, poor little bastard.

Incredible pic! Your comments about sympathy for Crocomire are funny considering this interview about the development of the game. (Search for "Fujiko" for the relevant bit.) Apparently some bosses were too cute as originally conceived and had to be made scarier so the player wouldn't feel bad about killing them. I don't think they quite tried hard enough with Crocomire -- that death sequence is still the most grisly this side of Mortal Kombat, and he doesn't look mean enough to deserve it.

Yeah, I think I read that interview before somewhere. Crocomire was probably the least scary looking boss in the game, I wish he didn't have to die like that. Poor poor Crocomire.

There's just so much about this piece that evokes all the best memories, not just of that scene, but of that game. The predominance of dark colors makes the light sources in Samus' suit seem faint, fragile, while conveying an oppressive, ambient menace. And the details--you've even managed to include the door in the ceiling leading into the area. I could go on.

Well I drew all the lines and detail work with pencil, then I used photoshop to colour it and add all the lighting effects and stuff.

Oh geez, that part always managed to scare the bejeesus out of poor young me, even when I knew what was coming. Especially when I knew what was coming. D:
I always felt sad for Crocomire, too. I never really saw him as part of the Space Pirates, more just a creature who happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Poor thing was just defending itself. Probably the last of it's kind, too. Ah well.
At least I got a nifty missile upgrade out of his death.

I also thought that he wasn't adapted for life in Norfair (at least not in the very hot areas), maybe he was a space pirate experiment gone wrong.
