Description this is poorly lit... and so it lacks some of the detail and richness of the original... but... well, i wanted to post it and get some feedback... and i was too lazy to set up a copy stand or butterfly lighting...

the original image is a large collage... i took pictures of it with an older polaroid camera (the kind with the pull apart film)... then transferred the dye/ink onto the large paper...

here's a good link for that... [link]

oh... and thanks for the fav!...

the original image is a large collage (3m x 2m) that i made... i took pictures of portions of it with an old polaroid camera... and then transferred the ink/dye from those little pictures onto a larger piece of paper...

polaroid interpretation.
You TITLED something. And yet, I'm confused as to what this is an interpretation OF.

It's clearly a self-portrait of some sort. But it's not a photograph. I think it's your collage of photo IDs, but I can't find the texture that would confirm this belief of mine.

If this were in a gallery, I'd put my face about half an inch away from the piece- very carefully making sure my nose never actually made contact with the art- and squint at it to try to figure out how you made it. I'm trying to do this on my computer, actually, but I can only get about four inches away before your Polaroids start turning into pixels.

...and, uh, pardon my ignorance, but what is a Polaroid transfer?

Basically, I like this quite a lot, but I'm somewhat mystified. It's different. It's like all your abstractions and darkroom techniques coming together in one "poorly lit" creation.

(Don't ask me to back that statement up.)

mgilpin In reply to Chameleonperson [2006-12-05 22:00:58 +0000 UTC]

well... it is the collage...

i'm not sure if told you the whole story or not... but the collage itself is a representation of a photo... i had made a document of myself running for my first photo class... and, of all the images, a closeup of my face while sprinting was the most striking... (i ran with my arms extended, camera pointing at my face)... so, when i decided to make a collage using photo i.d.s for a subsequent assignment, i chose that image as my reference...

i think that the 'photographic' quality of the collage is one of its stronger elements... so, when i wanted to do some transfers (see link below), i chose that collage as my subject...

i tried a couple simpler images (ones where the whole image was transferred) and was (a) bored and (b) under-whelmed with result... additionally, i wanted a less slavish translation... which led me to breaking up the image... i chose the grid since its internal/native organization leads to a strong connection between the elements... and i chose to separate them a bit more than normal, hoping that connection would bring the image back together in the viewers mind... (if that makes sense)...

thus, the result... and, for what it is worth, your description ("it's like all your...") is apt... i really like it...

oh... and here's a bit on the transfer method... you can read the intro to get a good idea of how it works... and the photo on the front is a good example of what most artists do with the technique... [link]

Ah, so THAT'S how a Polaroid works. And transferring it.

You know, if you wrote this sort of description in your original caption, you could save us both a lot of trouble. Grrrah.

Regardless, thank you. I love reading the insight leading up to the creation, even if I have to ask for it.

Is this a recent creation, or an old one? Probably old, but I've never heard of it..

And the mural was based on your running composite? I didn't know that.

mgilpin In reply to Chameleonperson [2006-12-06 04:48:56 +0000 UTC]

(laugh)... yeah... but for most people that is more detail than needed... besides... i enjoy the questions... for the record... and am glad to answer them... it is fun me... believe it or not...

this is an old piece... made seven years or so ago... oh, wait... do/did you mean that the technique is older?... yes, it is... quite a bit older...

actually, the running composite was a product of the original document... that piece is nine slides with accompanying text... then the mural... then the transfer... with the composite being the final reworking of the images...

Chameleonperson In reply to mgilpin [2006-12-06 05:16:27 +0000 UTC]

I never mean anything about old techniques, unless you start pulling daguerrotypes or something on us. Pretty much EVERYTHING you do involves some sort of mystifying darkroom technique of which all your fellow photographers seem excited and envious. My darkroom experiences involves the basics of turning black and white negatives into pictures; wax and slides and Polaroids and funny reworkings are all completely beyond me.

Lotta mileage out of one photo shoot. Damn.

mgilpin In reply to Chameleonperson [2006-12-06 05:46:44 +0000 UTC]

(laugh)... especially considering that was my shoot photo submittal... ever...

actually, i have given some thought to working with older chemistry... maybe even something like daguerreotypes... i'd love to try it... but... i hardly know where/how to start...

speaking of which, there is a photographer who i really admire who does that... his name is adam fuss... try this [link] for information on him... and definitely check out this [link] to his work...

frankly, i can think of few artists whose work i admire more...

i love doing transfers..i have a buch a need to do..i like how you arranged them like that on a paper...but i can't see it in full view for some reason..

mgilpin In reply to bluecitrusart [2006-12-08 07:10:21 +0000 UTC]

i think it is just too difficult (and thus expensive) to produce in smaller quantities... it needed a large market to be profitable... especially considering that the 600 series had greater demand... and was a bit easier to produce...

you can't see it in full view... hhhmmm... well, i didn't submit a terribly large file... do you have a large monitor?...

well it's too darn bad abiut the damn chemicals..i wish i could afford some 4x5 view camera..but the film for that will definetly leave me on the street, haha..
