Description
Two juvenile Western cottnmouths (Agkistrodon piscivorus leucostoma) that I spotlighted one night recently while observing the mating behaviors of a few different species of frogs. I think we found 5 cottons total over two nights.Notice the yellow tail tips on both of them. They use these as a lure to attract prey. In this case, I'm sure they were picking off adult cricket frogs.

Gorgeous! how big were they?
Also, know any really good places to stalk snakes? It's mostly Gardner snakes and I once found a green snake.

*Garter* snakes. There is no such thing as a Gardner snake just so you know.

They were both around nine inches or so. I know lots of places throughout the area's I've herped, but I don't know anywhere up in your area. The best thing you can do is download Google Earth (it's completely free) and use it to find accessible areas of habitat. Look for open grassy areas amongst woods, rocky hillsides, rocky fields, etc.
Also keep an eye out when you're just out driving or whatever for any areas that look like they could hold anything. You'd be surprised at some of the stuff I have found in small pockets of habitat within developed areas.

Google earth doesn't work right with my internet connection. I live out in the country, so I can find a lot of those areas. Usually this time of year I'd at least have seen a snake, but nothing yet :/

Wow, they sure are pretty. I wonder why it is that way with most things that can kill you.

Not sure, but some of the most awesome looking snakes are venomous for sure.
