Description
Chapter TwelveThey covered a great distance within the next few days. Conversation was minimal, for understandable reasons. Felix was more confused than ever. He knew once they reached the pound, he would have to make a choice. How would they even save Yuke, anyway?
Loon had mentioned sirens, so they figured he must mean it was near the place with the loud red trucks. Sure enough, there was a dead end street with a siren place on it. On the end of it was what appeared to be the pound. Felix could see a man carrying in a bunch of cages with cats and dogs in them.
He was just starting to wonder how they were going to get in when he heard a yowl. Felix turned in the direction of the sound and saw Scratch and Malcolm creeping out from between two buildings.
When they appeared in front of them, Felix noticed two strange things. First, Lenny appeared to be missing. Second, Scratch looked reluctant for some reason, and almost...fearful?
"Again?" Felix said, "What do you want this time?"
"Revenge!" snarled Malcolm.
"What for?" he asked, turning to Mel. She remained silent.
"She broke my heart, now I will put my claws through hers," he replied, apparently not giving anymore details.
Scratch spoke up, in a quiet voice not meant to be heard by Mel and Felix. "I don't know, Malc..."
Malcolm replied with a snarl. "Silence!" Felix wasn't sure when and how, but the fight started. Mel fought Malcolm, and Felix fought Scratch.
Felix jumped on top of him and clawed at his face, but Scatch rolled over on top of him. Felix was able to escape by biting his tail. He didn't think much after that, and the battle was just a slur of claws and teeth.
Meanwhile, Mel's battle was even more fierce. Malcolm was finally able to pin her down, and some of Mel's injuries had reopened. Felix saw Malcolm's teeth flash as he went in for a death bite to the neck. It looked like all was lost, and Felix wasn't close enough to stop him.
But then, something that Felix and Mel had never expected happened. Scratch, who was closer to Mel, leaped and shoved Malcolm away, freeing Mel. Malcolm tumbled into the street, and only had a second of disbelief before one of the huge, screaming red trucks slammed into him.
His body was left, limp in the middle of the road. Felix didn't have to go over to him to be sure he was dead.
"Why...?" Felix and Mel both said.
"I'm no killer," was all Scratch said, voice prickling with unease. He jumped onto a window sill, and from there some black, metal stairs on the outside of the building. Soon he was on the rooftop.
"Good luck, softpad!" Scratch called down, before turning and walking out of sight.
