Description Irritator Challengeri is a species of theropod dinosaurs that belonged to the spinosauridae family.
The Irritator's existence first came to general knowledge when paleontologists tried to study the skull, which had been damaged and altered with plaster by fossil smugglers, leading to Irritator being dubbed as such in 1996.
The second part of its full scientific name, 'Challengeri', is a tribute to Professor Challenger, a prominent character from 'The Lost World' by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Later, another species was found and called Angaturama, but this dinosaur's remains seemingly matched with Irritator's, leading to assume Angaturama and Irritator might just be the same species.
Case in point, their remains were both stored in the National Museum of Rio de Janeiro, which sadly burned down in 2018, presumably destroying the mount skeleton and remains of both creatures.
In terms of size, Irritator is estimated to grow up to eight meters in length and weigh around one ton.
This dinosaur lived in what is now known as Brazil during the Early Cretaceous, going extinct no later than 110 million years BC.
There, Irritator thrived, presumably living a semi-aquatic lifestyle, feeding on fishes and even snacking on some pterosaurs if given the chance to do so.
