Description Zwartekraai was curious about the heights of the Ragged Edges characters, so he could better imagine how they relate to eachother.
I slapped together this junk in an attempt to offer the basic range of heights. I can offer other people's heights upon request for the curious.

From left to right: Boone, Branz, Nada,Raege,Myers,Magpie,Yaroslava,Redding, Cuddles

Magpie is a character by: akandofharakon.deviantart.com/ from his Ragged Edges fanfic, most of which is so on the money it may as well be canon.

You may notice that Cuddles looks bigger here than usual. Truthfully, as a biomancer she is often shortening herself to make it easier to move around the ship and talk to people. This is merely the height she defaults to if she relaxes.

I am quite sure that, if measured this chart and its numbers are messed up.

Yeah now that I think of it, Voidborn tend to be unnaturally tall.Β  I guess I will rewrite this stuff then. Thanks for the help.

Dot let physics or the real world trouble you too much. I read a warhammer novel where the inhabitants of a dark planet had dark skin. Illogical.

Unless they needed the natural night camouflage in their pigment. Thus creatures that live on a planet where all is dark, blending in would make a lot of sense. Or having more acute night vision or non photoreceptive senses.Β

Present day biologic evidence seuggests that they would be almost tranlucent in skin tone with enlarged eyes and poor day time eyesight. They would also possibly be hairless. I'm basically describing the subterranian gang 'House Delaque' from Necromunda, though.

VoiceofRob In reply to Mr-Culexus [2014-02-15 05:03:37 +0000 UTC]

You could also be describing most subterranean creatures, as pigment typically evolves to defend against sun exposure, which can still kill modern day humans in large enough amounts. I would say fair point on that. Mole rats as an example.Β

Yeah, but warhammer 40k writers (Matt Ward and someone else who's name I forget specifically) Are known for doing things like that.Β  I like to try and keep things at least somewhat realistic.Β  Also, with the whole "Heights are taller than modern day,"Β  They would be more of an average height in the modern day.

Β

Thanks again, I am perfectly fine with the height change.

Β

I'm going to need to rewrite some heights then.

VoiceofRob In reply to notchthegreat [2014-02-14 19:18:57 +0000 UTC]

Nope, more gravity=less efficient to have taller creatures, they would actually be shorter than the average human, but have much higher muscle and bone density thus making them proportionally much stronger and tougher.Β

notchthegreat In reply to VoiceofRob [2014-02-14 19:58:54 +0000 UTC]

Yep, that was what I figured and I changed the heights on the characters accordingly.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

VoiceofRob In reply to notchthegreat [2014-02-14 20:37:22 +0000 UTC]

Yep, James Cameron tried to justify the blue cat people from Avatar being so tall by saying the planet had weak gravity and thus larger creatures. He never took into account that the humans should have in that case been jumping around several stories and been much stronger than anything on Pandora.Β

Well not quite, he wears the standard Catachan Flak vest... he just actually buttons the damn thing up while in combat, you nailed the t-shirt but he wears that rather than the traditional sleeveless Catachan shirts you see in GW artwork and models.Β

Basically just add a green flak vest, a black bandana, a scar horizontally across his nose, slightly darker hair and maybe some tiger stripe camo and it's pretty much spot onΒ

Basically my vision for Magpie is that he's the next generation Catachan, if his fathers generation of Catachan were the Vietnam era American soldiers then (specifically L.R.R.P, or Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol units being the equivalent of a Catachan Devil) then Magpie is the Panama/Grenada era special operations soldier if that's potentially helps with adding bits and pieces of accouterments like bandoliers, extra rope, and the such... maybe even a nifty sub-vocal Comm-bead... I don't know, I actually made his regiment and him using the Only War rules so if looking at that might give you some ideas then let me know.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Raven913 In reply to Mr-Culexus [2014-02-13 20:12:09 +0000 UTC]

It kind of makes sense though; humans have been getting taller throughout known history, so it's not entirely unreasonable to say that people in the 41st millennium would be taller on average than people in the 3rd millennium.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

DaveP42 In reply to Raven913 [2014-02-14 01:07:28 +0000 UTC]

Mostly this has to do with better access to protein, especially during childhood; and partially with the general Β reduction in malnutrition. Example being, North Koreans and South Koreans are the same peoples- the nations only separated in the 1950's, and many families have branches on both sides- Β but North Koreans averageΒ 2-4" shorter (depending on age andΒ whose study data you use) Β andΒ are noticeably lighter Β than South Koreans. Β Advantage: Capitalism!

In the 40K universe, I'd think that (gravity and ancestry being equal) the 90% of the population who live on the subsistence level- corpse-starch rations and the like- would be substantially shorter and less healthy than the elites (Adminitratum, officer-rank, and other 'status' families), very much like during our own Middle Ages.

As far as Lady Alice Boone goes... some girls are just short.

Raven913 In reply to DaveP42 [2014-02-14 02:15:11 +0000 UTC]

The Dark Heresy character generation tables show a spectrum of heights around modern average for Hive and Imperial worlders, so if they're living under poor conditions it could be argued that the maximum height increased slightly between our time and the 41st millennium. Void born tend to be taller yet weaker likely due to the weak gravity of ships. Feral worlders are a bit if an oddity; the table generates them as bigger than hivers and Imperial worlders, which makes little sense since they have arguably the worst living conditions. That one should probably be chalked up to GW not doing the research and/or deferring to Rule of Cool.

wirecrossing In reply to Raven913 [2014-02-14 00:30:32 +0000 UTC]

Not really. There is a hard upper limit, biologically, to how tall we can get. We've hit that with good nutrition and such in the West. In 40k most of it has to do with mutation or augmentation.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Raven913 In reply to wirecrossing [2014-02-14 02:05:24 +0000 UTC]

Even without the mutation it is quite possible that in the space of 38 millennia humans could have evolved to be capable of growing at least slightly taller, at least among the aristocracy and almost certainly among the often noodle-people proportioned void born.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

wirecrossing In reply to Raven913 [2014-02-14 02:58:04 +0000 UTC]

Slightly, yes. But 38 thousand years is not really enough time for evolution to encourage growth on such a scale. After all, we are not so much taller than humans who lived 200,000 years ago.

It's all quite irrelevant, because science has no real bearing on fantasy. In 40k mutation is a thing that happens all the time, and in ways quite at odds with science. That's the beauty of IMAGINATION DUST.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Raven913 In reply to wirecrossing [2014-02-14 03:34:40 +0000 UTC]

It is true that 40k could easily be considered more fantasy than sci-fi. Sometimes I think Games Workshop just got everyone together and said, "OK, people, we've already got giant mutant supersoldiers, exploding psychics and ships that travel faster than light by taking a shortcut through hell... how can we make this TEN TIMES MORE OVER THE TOP?!?"
