Description In a brilliant flash of light coupled with a thunderous crackle, Th0r found himself back on Asgard, standing in the middle of the ostentatious chamber that housed the Bifrost; the mystical gate gave off a loud humming sound as the power died down and finally ceased. Th0r's blue eyes instantly met with Heimdall's golden armor. The boy smiled cheerfully, cradling a small bulge under his shirt.

"Heimdall, you won't believe what I've found!"

"What did you think of Jotunheim?" Heimdall asked, ignoring the boy; his gaze not once wandering towards Th0r.

Th0r frowned and brushed off the question with a speedy answer. "It was ghastly, just as Father described it. But, in the temple..." His voice suddenly became low. "...it was filled with dead bodies. Creatures I'd never seen before. Horrid, vicious-looking beasts..."

"Lykonians." Heimdall answered quickly.

Th0r's excitement dimmed. "Lykonians? What are Lykonians?"

"They were magnificent creatures, taken against their will from their realm by the Frost Giants to a life of torture on Jotunheim." Heimdall's gaze hardened. "And, incidentally, they were not vicious, but rather very peaceful. They detested war." His face suddenly became very sad, as did his voice. "The Frost Giants killed them all."

Th0r could sense a sadness about the Gatekeeper, but it didn't occur to the child why the great Heimdall would sympathize would the strange creatures. Instead, another thought entered the young Asgardian's mind.

"Why did the Frost Giants take all the Lykonians to Jotunheim?"

"Not all of them. Just the females." Heimdall answered.

"But why?" Th0r pressed.

As though waking up from a dream, Heimdall's head snapped toward the curious child. After a brief pause, he responded.

"You're too young to know why." He paused again and brought his eyes to Thor's shirt; he noticed the bulge. "When you entered the temple, my vision of you became clouded. Tell me...what did you find?"

Again, Th0r smiled a massive grin. He lifted his shirt with one hand, and with the other, he caught the small grey bundle that plopped out. Heimdall nearly lost his breath at the sight of it. Th0r held it up proudly.

"Look! I found it in a room at the back of the temple."

"The Holy Room..." Heimdall murmured to himself; the words were inaudible to Th0r.

"It was all alone. I think it's a baby Lykonian."

"That's exactly what it is..." Heimdall spoke slowly, his eyes still unbelieving of what they saw.

"I knew it!" Th0r laughed, hugging the pup close to his body. "I just couldn't leave it in there to die. That would have been dreadful." He tickled the pup's belly.

Th0r looked up when he heard a clanging sound. He was shocked to see that Heimdall had dropped his sword. Shakily, the Gatekeeper held out his hands.

"Let me take a look at it."

"Of course." Th0r gently handed the pup to Heimdall, who's hands were shaking violently now. Th0r had never seen the Gatekeeper act this way, and watched curiously.

Once in his hands, Heimdall brought the pup close to his body, cradeling its head carefully. He rubbed a finger against the pup's ear. The pup opened its mouth in a playful manner and nibbled Heimdall's finger. He laughed. Again, Th0r gave Heimdall a strange look. No one had ever even seen Heimdall smile before, let alone laugh! It must've been the charm of the pup.

"He's something, isn't he?" Th0r broke the silence.

"She." Heimdall corrected him. "This pup is a female. She's small, for a Lykonian. Very small. Captivity on Jotunheim must not have been easy on her mother." Again, Heimdall's voice grew sad.

Th0r watched in shock as Heimdall pulled the pup to his chest and hugged her tightly. Why in the world was he acting this way?, the boy couldn't help but think to himself. After taking a deep breath, Heimdall suddenly thrust the pup back into Th0r's arms.

"You must decide what's to be done with her." Heimdall said staunchly as he picked up his sword.

"Well...I was thinking of asking Father if I could..."

"The only known Lykonians left alive were found only on Jotunheim." Heimdall interrupted. "If you approach the allfather with this pup, he will know where you got it. And he will know who sent you."

Th0r lowered his head. He had never thought of that. Not only would he be in trouble for going to Jotunheim at such a young age, but good Heimdall could possibly lose his job and his citizenship for helping him. Stroking the pup's head fur, Th0r looked back up at Heimdall with moistened eyes.

"What are we going to do? We can't send her back to Jotunheim! She'll die if we do. What about the Lykonian realm? Can the Bifrost send her there?"

"The Bifrost can send her to the realm of Lykoi, but it is dead. An adult Lykonian can thrive on a dead world with very few problems; Lykonians adapt faster than they die. But this pup is too young to survive on her own. She must be cared for by someone."

"But who?"

Heimdall looked out on the universe, his golden eyes scanning the worlds. Suddenly he turned and walked up to the platform, thrusting the sword into the sheath that commenced the opening of the Bifrost. Th0r looked on suspiciously, clutching the pup tightly.

"Where are you sending her?" He asked worriedly.

"To Midgard." Heimdall answered.

Th0r recoiled. "Midgard? Realm of the mortals? Why there?"

"There are creatures on Midgard that the mortals keep as companions and use for work. Their young are similar in appearance to a Lykonian pup. Surely, one of the Midgardians will take pity on the abandoned pup and take care of her. But you must let her go."

Th0r became very sad at the thought, but knowing the Gatekeeper was correct in sending her away, he gave the pup one final hug before setting her down and taking a few steps back. The pup turned and looked at Heimdall and her little rescuer for the last time with her sharp golden pupil-less eyes. And then, in a flash, she was gone.

Part 2 of Chapter 1. Heimdall getting to hold Kai'yote for the first, last and only time. I thought it was another important visual that is very detrimental to the story. It also shows Heimdall in a more emotional light.
