Description Well, she is.

First she was crying over being alone and abused, but then I dropped her on the floor and she lost one foot. And now she is inconsolable...

Material: Linden
Tools: Knife, chisels

I think the anatomy is pretty much ok, although I exaggerated her curves a little bit on purpose.
Feedback please! What do you think?

Thanks! I'm glad to hear that you like her!
Yeah, I didn't wanna sandpapper her, I wanted it rough and thought that would bring out the emotion even more. I could never have captured any strong feeling if I would have shown her face, that just seems to hard!
mm, I know - there something wrong with her breast but the lightning/shadows makes it look even worse.

Thanks for you comment!!

This is really a lovely piece of work and a great presentation of it.
And it's much better to cry over one's foot that because of loneliness

I'm not much of an anatomy person, but I'd say you've got it down! Very nice, it looks incredible!

Wow... I like the fact that she's rough in the sculpt and not all smooth. This figure depicts a ton of emotion despite the fact that she really has no face showing.

Myana In reply to celestialdolls [2006-07-08 20:37:15 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!!
yeah, I didn't wanna make her all 'smooth' because I thought that would take away a lot of the emtion I tried to capture. I'm glad to hear that you think I did capture emotions in her body, it was hard!! And there's no way I could have made a face that could show any emotion!

hey, some of us are born with exaggerated curves

you've really got the motion and emotion here. you can feel her curling into herself. the anatomy looks great, though her foot seems little on the small side by comparison. and her lack of foot needs a band aid or something.

This is beautiful, and beautiful work! as one who works in 3 dimensions by adding to (as with clay, polymer clay, papier mache) instead of taking away (as with wood, soapstone, marble) I am always amazed at how someone can do that... chip away until you 'find' the figure within!

ooh, thanks! I'm so glad to hear that you like it! And many thanks for the fav!
hmm, how can I explain? You gotta have a clear image in your head of what you wanna do, at least I do. And then feel it, turn the piece and looks from all different directions the whole time. Feel both the body and the emotion.. If you know what I mean.
I think, in this case at least, knowledge about the human body/female body helps a lot.

butterpaw In reply to Myana [2006-06-18 17:03:39 +0000 UTC]

thank you for the really good explanation.. it is much like what I do.. only you need to be a bit braver.. you can't put back what you've taken away ...

lol, maybe you are right.. braver or insane

butterpaw In reply to Myana [2006-06-19 23:14:14 +0000 UTC]

insanity and bravery are often quite close together XD except my sort of insanity usually involves trying to develop a 3d adventure game with no money and not enough people .. but it's fun

I know the feeling you're trying to convey with that beautiful piece, and the humor that comes through with the renaming is inspiring. Reminds meof a Christmas tree I made of cake frosting for a competition, with a little skier and a snowman, whole nine yards, that I dropped and the skier broke off. So I moved the snowman on top of the skis and called it Snowman Takes Up Skiing. You do beautiful work, the anatomy looks great and the missing foot adds the character that all people have.

Your skill at carving wood is far beyond mine. However, there's one thing that bothers me about her. Her breasts seem off, both a little too low, and a little too close to the sides of her torso. Especially on the right, that one almost seems as though it should be her stomach instead of her breast. But you definitely captured the mood very well, and it seems to be a very feminine figure.

Myana In reply to soundinnovation [2006-04-19 14:15:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!
I think you're right, never really seen that before. I guess I tried to do some really heavy, big breasts hanging... but since I don't have that myself, I had to guess how they would look

sporkychan In reply to ??? [2006-04-04 14:25:26 +0000 UTC]

beautiful... although maybe i'm biased because i'm so impressed with anyone who manages to handle wood well.

the proportions do look appropriate, if not correct... exaggeration always has a special place in my heart.

Thats really clever, kinda looks better now though, when things arent quite perfect they uually gain alot more intrest, i like it, alot of emotion.

This is sad... she is lonely, abused and mutilated... very nice work though. The only thing I would say is that the left shoulders is a bit wide (or perhaps it's the breast that is a bit too low) otherwise it's a really emotionful (does this word exist ?) work. I love the line and the curves of the back on the picture 4 !

I really like the back too!
You're right, it looks a bit weird with the shoulder - but actually I think that's the light and shadows on the photo, 'cause it doesn't look that weird in real.

Myana In reply to EmoXide [2005-12-19 16:49:21 +0000 UTC]

Not that long, maybe 5-6 hours..
Yep, it's from one piece wood

EmoXide In reply to Myana [2005-12-19 23:49:15 +0000 UTC]

Amazing, ive known some people to join 2 pieces to save in cost. It never ends up the same as it is as one piece.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Myana In reply to EmoXide [2005-12-20 16:40:24 +0000 UTC]

I think it all depends on what you are doing with the piece. Joining two pieces can be - if it's done well - hardly visible for the eye. And sometimes you get more 'strengtht' to the piece when shapeing it. If I had done that with her, maybe the foot hadn't been so fragile?

EmoXide In reply to Myana [2005-12-20 23:02:42 +0000 UTC]

yeah, i never thought of it that way. The way you have the grain going to play s a big part in it. Ill post a pic of a table i made, and a kitchen i done
