It's funny, I don't even think about being in a wheelchair, even though I so totally am. Whenever people ask me about it, I'll just be all, "Oh yeah, that. WELL, I'm glad you remembered, because I sure as hell didn't...."
Wheelchairs are the least of my problems...
ANYWAY.
Lovely picture and message.

"It’s an ingenious way to live."
Pretty sure people who are blind, are paralyzed, or have some life crippling mental disability would say otherwise.

Neil Marcus (person who said the quote) has a disability, so I'm pretty sure he knows what he's talking about. You have to learn to see the positive, otherwise the anger would destroy you.

And my blind mother would love to argue against this point.
She and some of the other disabled people I meet through her since she is in a group for disabled people in her area would say that this is just trying to make a problem seem like its a gift. You can spin it anyway you want; if you had what you were missing you would be happier.
I have been taking care of my mother for years; cleaning, cooking, driving her around, and she absolutely hates it. Not having to be with me of course, just the fact she has to be so dependent. One of my 2 jobs is working with these people and doing their everyday jobs to ensure they can live semi-independent lives and every time they drop something, trip, can't walk to/access something, they will always mention how they hate having to rely on others for such stupid things or how they can't do something because of a stupid disability.
Just because one guy wants to try and make things sound better than they are doesn't mean that in the end it isn't still a disability. I have experienced this for years with many different people, I think I have a pretty solid grasp on what I'm talking about.

I was looking for a post like this. It's nice that the artist is trying to cheer up the disabled, but he is trivializing the difficulties associated with disability. Which I think ultimately could do more harm than good.

You're entitled to your opinion, just like Neil Marcus is entitled to his.

So then why was your first post aim towards my opinion not being equal?

Kazali In reply to Fei-Larco [2012-05-24 15:43:45 +0000 UTC]
I believed it was misinformed and that you thought the quote was by someone who had no knowledge of what it's like to be severely disabled. Of course if you disagree with the quote or me, then that's fine too, we can stop talking and go about our day.

But you did the same thing as me, the main difference is it doesn't matter to me whether he is disabled or not. My opinion differs and I made it apparent. Its not like what I said will change based on who the guy is.
Anyway, you put your foot in your mouth, this doesn't have to keep going.

So if a wheelchair loses its wheels, is it confined to a chair?
