I somehow managed to teach myself smooth blending by murdering using the eye dropper + opacity.
I actually hated the effect of the smudge tool and gave up on it in one day xD (it was only used to "blend"my old MS Paint drawings and it made it look meh.)
I personally found it hard to use other brushes, so I'm sticking to default for now.

Most of the other things such as contrast and palette selection, I gathered from other extremely helpful tutorials on deviantART. Art at school helped as well

This tutorial really clarified things for me. Thank you very much!

Who this is going to help me a lot! I just got my tablet and now I figured how to draw with it, I couldn't figure how to color with it. I just learned the basics of how artists do 'palette brush' looking paints like this www.my-walls.org/wallpapers/20…

This is awesome. Especially considering I just watched a video where someone used all sorts of shape brushes to paint elements.

My Opinion..

People have different perspective,
for me, there a lot things that mostly important not just only how to mix color, lights, and also effects.
i seen few artist they can mix color ferfectly, but they ignored proportion and visual angel, that makes some problems.

And again.., coloring methodes was very different for each artist, you can tel them `style`, even they make different perception or maybe wrong about colours, and the arts not only percepted by simple things.

Yes, there is no such a sortcut to mastered digital-art, and creating great piece.Β

you need process, a loot of practicing, seriously, dedicated, working hard, and take years for it.

I hope there is no miss-understanding about my words

Literally just got my Wacom in the mail today, and I've been painting for 5 hours. Figured out after a few tries that the blending tool was super NOT effective in creating a nice look. But I'm glad I stumbled upon this during my break b/c it they are very helpful tips!

Do you have any tips on blending? I've been using the smudge tool because I don't know any other ways to blend.

Chances are it will be better if you simply paint something blurred to begin with instead of using smudge afterwards. Try using brushes with low opacity (perhaps around 20%-30%?) and set your brush to its softest setting, then try painting with a slightly different color/tone on a flat color to get a feel for what you can do with it. If you are worried about accidentally painting stuff outside of a particular area, consider looking up a tutorial on masking in Photoshop.

Do you have a tutorial on anime or cartoon style of coloring, kinda what you get on either the avatar the legend of and or Young justice, I really like the way they did things

the-art-of-murder [2013-04-25 14:18:05 +0000 UTC]

But the default brushes are crap. The best are the ones that profesionals use, like Shaddy Safadi's brushes.

CynicalCoyote In reply to the-art-of-murder [2013-08-03 23:54:41 +0000 UTC]

Try changing the opacity of these brushes and you might be surprised how much they can turn out to be helpful

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Loona-Cry In reply to the-art-of-murder [2013-05-02 08:46:25 +0000 UTC]

Most brushes are just slight edits on the default brushes, like the spacing. The general shapes are fine, then you can tweak the brush engine to make the brush more to your needs.

Very eye-opening! 11 is one of my BIGGEST problems (at least it feels like it to me XD; ) Though I know it's not the only XD; I fall into so many it's not funny. still, these are great pointers to begin practicing on in my next few paintings. Thank you very much for the tips!

This is a great tutorial. I am just getting more into painting my pictures and wanting to try using some electronic painting programs (such as on an iPad or computer) but I don't understand the tools well enough. This really gave me an idea on how to work with the tools more effectively.
