Description
This piece is now the cover-art of Zippered Flesh 1, an anthology of body modifications gone bad. nebu.deviantart.com/art/Zipperβ¦It is available at Amazon.com
There are many legends involving the Cyclops, most notably Homers Odessey. But there is another that tells how the Cyclops were offered forsight in exchange for one of thier eyes. (they supposedly had 2 eyes in the beginning) The Cyclops agreed but found that they had been tricked, for the only foresight they gained was in seeing thier own deaths.
My attempt with this wp was to capture the moment of horror when the Cyclops saw his own death. Hope it worked. =]

Very nice texturing and colour. But...that stitch thing in the left corner of his head bothers me a little. Overall , a great work as usual!

I think I heard that in the cheesy fantasy flick "Krull".
Poor guy, probably has bad depth perception.

I tell you how to cyclops rock,
but then you go and turn around and break my heart,
you waste my cyclops time,
and mess up my cyclops mind.
From the They Might Be Giants Song "Cyclops Rock", which, until I saw the lyrics, was about a rock with one eye, not a dance or style of music, or something...
Oh well. Lyrics obtained from [link]

This absolutely great, nebu The texturing is perfect, specially on the mouth.
It shows an horror and despair feeling very well. I love reading your description for this piece, I knew nothing about cyclops.

Marvellously frightening.
I love the eerie, gaping expression of the doomed cyclops. I like the varied texture of his skin (esp. the cracks). The composition is really effective as well...all that black space, promotes such a strong feeling of foreboding and horror.
Have I ever mentioned I love you?

""Sonic hedgehog" was the name given in the 1980s to a protein found only in embryos, which responsible for establishing the body's midline. A sonic hedgehog deficiency was found to be the cause of cyclopia - a gruesome, fatal birth defect in which both eyes are contained within the same socket, giving the appearance of the legendary Greek Cyclops. Cyclopia is a symptom of holoprosencephaly, literally "whole forebrain", meaning that the brain is not divided into hemispheres like a normal brain, but is rather a single lump of tissue. Since the hemispheric division of the brain - produced by the sonic hedgehog protein - is the basis for the midline, embryos without divided brains are confused, so to speak, about how far apart their eyes need to be. Sonic hedgehog is the reason most of us have two eye sockets, set a reasonable distance apart, with a symmetrical nose in between them. A "cyclops" has only one eye socket and no nose."
There's the legend of Cyclops!
Actually, I really dig that stitching. How did you do that?

i think you captured it well...not just a sense of horror, but one of overall shock, surprise...almost as if he were startled...a nice mixture of "oh, shit!" and "well, that came from out of left field.."
i lllllllike it!!!

I think you did a good job of capturing the horror one might feel upon seeing how they will die. Assuming that kind of thing bothers them, of course.
You did an excellent job of picking an appropriate texture, as usual. Good work, Nebu.

I absolutely love this! The eye does really capture the emotion and feeling of surprise. If i were to rework this piece at all, I would ad some highlights and/or reflections (for the eye). Thanks for sharing this wonderful piece nebu!

Great piece, nebu. The only things I would modify are the size and sharpness. And maybe duplicate the layer, set it to multiply and take it down to about 47% ocpacity to help define the shading. Though, who am I to say that about your outstanding work.
Great job.

neat!
the eye's bugging me nebu...the area under the eyeball and the iris just don't seem to organically flow with the rest of the image. there's no freshness or life to that area of the image. and why blue? his skin's blue...it just doesn't do justice to your talents.
the lips kick my ass though...the composition and contrast levels are inticing.
cheers.

on the crit note..
some patches on the skin are a little softer than their sorroundings .. they could use a soft touch of sharpening
