Description Built between 1912 and 1917 by NSWGR Eveleigh Workshops and Clyde Engineering of Granville, the TF class were a development of the T class 2-8-0s from 1896, even if that class was still being produced. Unlike them, all driving wheels were fitted with flanges and to allow some sideways movement, knuckle joints were provided to the centre coupling rods. Unfortunately, the engines had an issue of being unbalanced at speed so restrictions were placed to prevent rough riding and track damage. 24 were modified with better balanced wheels which allowed them to operate on faster mail and fruit trains.

In later years, the knuckle joints and centre flanged wheels were swapped out with the them gaining the same wheel layout as the T class along with a common boiler for the T and later K classes, they became known as the "Standard Goods" class, which would become the 53 class after 1924, with all locomotives renumbered as 5301-5490. 24 locomotive of the class weren't fitted with superheaters so were scrapped in the 1930s with withdrawals of the superheated members of class withdrawn between January 1957 and January 1972. Out of 190 built, three have been preserved:
