Description
The New South Wales Government Railways (NSWGR) Q class was a class of six 4-4-0T suburban tanks. They were built by Beyer, Peacock & Co. in 1880 as works numbers 1909-1914. While useful on many mainline suburban duties and on lines such as the Bankstown line from Sydenham on the South Coast Line (better known as the "Illawarra Line") and Cabramatta on the Main South Line + a branch to Lidcombe on the Main Western Line, the Q class' axle loading made them unsuitable for other lines such as the line to East Hills and Richmond. In 1910, all six were rebuilt into 4-4-0 tender engines and then sold to the Commonwealth Railways (CR) in 1912 for the construction of the Trans-Australian Railway.Reclassed as the "CR D class" but retaining their NSWGR numbers, the converted tank engines found themselves not suited to the hot and dry climate of the Nullabor Plain resulting in cases of cracking gauge glasses, tubes blowing, broken stays, side rod brasses and axle box brasses, which caused them to spend more time in Port Augusta workshops than helping in the construction of the line. Following the selection of the G/GA class 4-6-0s (based on the NSWGR P class, later the 32 class) as the main locomotives, the D class was relegated to shunting duties withdrawals starting in 1921 with No. 159, which all but No. 162 withdrawn by 1926. No. 162 was last used in 1943 and the class were scrapped between 1958 and 1959, with none preserved. As for why the Commonwealth Railways kept an entire class intact long after their withdrawals is anyone's guess. NSWGR would reuse their experience with the Q class when converting 77 of the 30 class 4-6-4Ts into 4-6-0s (labelled "30T") between 1928 and 1933.
I've went for doing the class in its original tank engine form in NSWGR Passenger Lined Black with a set of alternate numbers so it's possible to recreate all six members of this forgotten class.
This sprite is free to use but on the condition that the following names are mentioned.

Update 20/08/2023: Reduced locomotive height as I felt it was too tall, background now transparent.
