Well the once you become a Beta Tester, you get to try the new features that dA introduces to the site before normal users.
This is done to test the bugs in those new features.
And about becoming senior member.... I don't know. And may be those who are seniors, even they don't!!

It's simple to be a beta tester. Simply go to your settings [link]
and once ur a subscriber you have an option for Beta-Testers available. So just Check it and press OK! Done!

I saw one yesterday I didn't recognize, so I thought I would return to your chart to see if I could figure it out, but it's not on the chart.
The symbol is # on this account: [link] I thought it might be a symbol for a group but then I looked at another group I'm familiar with & it didn't have that symbol.
