Description This is a digital drawing tutorial for beginners.
I've recently discovered myself how to use a graphic tablet
to achieve high-level artworks, and would like to share that
knowledge with you.

This tutorial is designed for those who know how to
draw traditionally.
There's no 'magic trick' here, I'm
just giving you the tools that will allow you to use your
drawing abilities with a computer, which I think has many
new possibilities for an artist.

The second part of this tutorial, Digital Painting, can be found here

Enjoy!

Thanks for the DD!
I'd like to thank everyone for their 's and lovely comments. It's awesome!

And I truly hope this tutorial will indeed help you become a digital artist!

this is a very helpful and interesting tutorial! great work
how long did the drawing itself took you? Is drawing digital faster than drawing traditional?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nortagem In reply to Gironimo [2010-06-19 16:03:09 +0000 UTC]

It took about 8 hours or so.
I'd say digital painting/drawing is definitely faster than doing it traditionally, once you're comfortable with your graphic tablet.
You can use all sorts of tricks, you can erase parts and change colors without doing the whole thing all over again, and it's WAY easier to modify your art throughout. It's just easier, no doubt.

This is really good how you've put it that way. I tried few portraits drawing atop of original picture but its always a fail. Problem with switching all the time to reference is that i should have a second monitor Anyway, time to tray few tips from your tut.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

nortagem In reply to DevJohnson [2010-06-19 12:38:25 +0000 UTC]

Of course, a second monitor is a world of difference, but you can manage with one pretty well. Just keep a small window of the part you're drawing at the top-left of your screen, then leave the rest for Photoshop.
Good luck!

Thats an idea, i'll just have to stick it on top. Thanks for the suggestion!

This always looks so easy, but when I try it I only get the effect that you drew on the background as farm
It just looks crap >.<

Aaaanyways Grats on the DD!

nortagem In reply to BlazingsNL [2010-06-19 12:48:06 +0000 UTC]

Well if you've gotten through my tutorial to the very last step, that's already great. The rest is just lots and lots of practice.
The farm's easy - just use the same brush as you did for the fur
base-colors - with opacity of 60%-80%. Not too many details there, just a few thick brush strokes...

BlazingsNL In reply to nortagem [2010-06-19 17:10:51 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I just have a lot of problems with going from crap to realistic Doesn't really matter which technique I use
I guess it's a lot of practice, but if only there would be someone close to me who could teach me his/her way.. it would help so much But I think a lot of beginning digital artist have that problem

I can't tell you how great it is to see someone use the Alt+opacity jitter+painterly way of working.
It is a technique that seems to be overlooked here at DA. Hopefully after this DD a couple of thousand more people will be able to put this technique to use!
