Description
...Scar didn't want him anyway."The new King was stunned at the tanned Lioness' cutting words, as she shoved a disheveled and malnourished cub at his feet. The cub wouldn't look him in the eye and just sobbed, flinching at every movement...waiting for something.
The Lioness seemed aggitated at Simba's hesitation and awkwardness with the situation. Surely, she wasn't suggesting what he thinks she is. Such a practice had been outlawed for many generations!
Simba had heard stories of their kind's dark history, where males would slaughter healthy cubs for no reason other than having the 'wrong' bloodline. It was just something that came naturally to them, as males had to make the best of their (often) short reigns as quickly as they could. But ultimately, it became a detriment to the very population of their species as their numbers dwindled more and more.
The Maseru Pride were the first to outlaw it outright! Even very young cubs of a banished King; were to be spared until they came of age, and then exiled to start life elsewhere, giving the cubs at least a chance at life and reproduction. News about this change quickly spread, and soon it was enforced among all Prides across Africa. Lion populations flourished again once more. Before too long, their biology adapted and evolved. Lioness' reproductive cycles became more regular and were no longer affected by the death of their offspring, making infanticide useless anyway. Cubs were finally recognized as sentient beings with rights, regardless of their blood.
Eventually, the barbaric practice became nothing but a horror story, a grim reminder of Lion life before civility.
But unbeknownst to Simba (until now), Scar decided to bring it back. His logic was that any brood other than his own; was 'tainted' and 'cursed', and needed to be erradicated from this Earth. As for his own cubs, he felt that if he wasn't around to influence his kin directly, then they didn't have a right to live at all, he'd rather they be dead than influenced by any other King. The other Pride Lionesses were adamantly against it! But as King, he had the authority to overwrite laws and enforce his own. Much blood was shed as a result.
Simba never had any intention of hurting her son. He just wanted to introduce himself to a Lioness he'd never met before. He couldn't fathom how she thought this ancient, abhorrent practice was expected of him. Or how callous and cold she was in the face of it all. Simba assured her that this method would be put to rest under his rule once again, to take her son home and never speak about it again. It was then Simba realized that the Pridelands needed some serious damage control! It was much worse than he thought.
----------------------------------
So, this came about when I watched the scene where Zira offers up Kovu as a 'pound of flesh'. I know this is to show what a terrible mother she is and whatnot, but without context; this seems like a REALLY stupid thing for her to do. This male Lion is pissed off protecting his daughter, he has his entire Pride with him, she tells him that this (at the moment) defenseless cub is going to be Scar's successor - essentially saying "meet your future assassin, Simba!", then shoves this weak cub at his feet; silently daring him to kill it. If he decided to kill Kovu (as she willingly gave him the chance to), or take him away from her (thus ruining her plans) it would've been no skin off his nose, so why risk it?? So, (as we all have to do with this movie) I'm here to try and fill the context blanks and suggest that Zira has tested Simba's stance on killing cubs before...with Nuka.
Scar rejected him, and thus; Zira had no attachment to this cub. She neglected him, leaving him malnourished; resulting in cognitive deficiencies, among other problems. He was a burden to her, and so; when Simba took over - she had no qualms about handing him over. Zira prepared Nuka the entire previous night for what (she thought) was going to happen. Nuka was scared sick out of his mind, but trusted that his mother knew best.
"Will it hurt?" He finally asked.
But Zira pretended not to hear that, as she could give him no answer that would subdue his overwhelming fear.
The time came. She pushed Nuka at Simba's feet, waiting for 'the crunch'.
"Will you h-hold me, mama?" Nuka whimpered.
Zira's mind was already elsewhere. Thinking about the secret newborns she had stashed away from Pride Rock, including Scar's REAL chosen heir...or at least, the heir she DREAMT Scar chose the night of his death. To her, it was a sign that Scar wanted those cubs to live. Nuka was just a throw away, as every Pride Lioness knew about him.
But Simba (obviously) refused. Zira was left stuck with him, as only males could carry out this sacrificial ceremony. Much to her dismay.

This also implies that TLK takes place centuries from now, and this 'dark past' is referring to our modern day Lions; with their savage way of life and their dwindling population.
Okay, seriously dA. Can someone please tell me how to fix the blurriness? I never had a problem with this in the past, but the last few submissions since the site updated has been a nightmare! They always come out blurry, no matter how hard I try to fix the resolution before posting!
