Moon 1

It was a nice, sunny day, and Leafnest was out training with his apprentice, Briarpaw. The pale apprentice gazed around, taking it all in. It had been a moon since he had started training, and Briarpaw was doing well. Leafnest was happy he'd been chosen to train him, and that unlike the death of the apprentice Flashpaw, things seemed to be going better this moon. Gullheart had been sad when her apprentice died, but she seemed to be doing ok now. Being the Deputy, Leafnest had done his best to give the apprentice a proper send-off to the stars. He hoped the clan wouldn't loose another apprentice, but you could never really know. Up ahead, Briarpaw was sniffing some old trees, nose close to the pale bark. "Be careful." Leafnest barked. He sighed as he watched Briarpaw vanish around a tree. 'That cub...' The older hyena trotted forward, careful of the trees. Briarpaw had stopped beside a tall, almost bare tree, nose in the air. "Leafnest! I smell something!" He yipped. Leafnest tilted his head. "What is it?" "Don't know, I don't recognize it..." Briarpaw trailed off, gaze still upward. All of a sudden, the trees around the young hyena started to shake. Briarpaw froze, eyes going wide. "Briarpaw!" Leafnest shouted. He was about to dart forward when the trees fell, all blocking Leafnest's view of the younger hyena, as the last thing he saw before the trees fully blocked his view was Briarpaw's paw stretched towards him.
