Description
Model: Johnny Depp (obviouslyMaterial: graphite
Well it is finally done--I procrastinate way too much. This is a drawing I did for my friend [link] for her birthday/Christmas. Hope she likes it.
As always, the scan took away the shading and made it more rough looking than it actually is. I'll try taking a digital picture later today and perhaps put it in my scraps. If it looks better, I'll replace this one. Other than that, constructive criticism much appreciated.
Thanks for looking and I hope everyone has a nice Winter season/break! (keeping PC you know

Sometimes I come across other artists drawings and I look at it and can't imagine how in the world that the piece before me is actually a drawing and not the actual person or a photograph. This is one of those drawings. How did you do this? What did you create this with? Paper, what type? Pencils, which ones? My God, if only I could one day do this... Awesome!

Thank you so much As you look around in this site you'll notice my stuff pales in comparison to other people's.
I use bristol board and regular mechanical pencils w/ 2B lead.
Thanks for the comment!

This might sound stupid but when you say you use Bristol board is it an actual board because I have gone to art supplies sites and I have found bristol paper but not bristol board. Just wondering if it is one in the same. Also, I spoke to another artist who surprisingly enough told me she did not blend... Do you blend? I have to blend... I use those pointy paper things to blend with... I can't think of the name right now, I haven't drawn on paper in so long, just via computer...
Sorry to slam you with questions. I just never had any formal training or any art classes at all, not even in high school. I couldn't draw for 29 yrs then had a horrific car wreck and woke up from a coma and 7 months later I could draw... Weird..
Thanks again~

To my knowledge bristol board is the same as bristol paper. I generally blend (with either the tortillion or a paper towel--generally the towel) because I try to make my drawings realistic.

Okay, just tell me if I am being a total pain in the arse here... I keep looking at your drawings, trying to understand how in the world you did it... I know, I am such a tool aren't I? How did you make the dark parts so dark?
Seriously, if I am bugging you please tell me.... You are probably way younger than me and are probably thinking that I am just some sort of weird old lady or something. God... Sorry... I just can't comprehend it... Did or do you take art classes... I so need to do that... Your drawings are so crisp...
Okay NYDevon, I will shutup now... Thanks for your abounding patience in regard to my weirdness and never ending questions...

No problem
I always have trouble getting things dark. I generally use 2B lead with multiple layers but for me it always turns out really metallic/shiney (8B and 6B always looks rough for me). I hate that so I'm still trying to figure out darkness. I might try charcoal pencils one of these days.
I've persoanlly never taken formal art classes--except the ones that are mandatory for school and even then all we did was paint (yuck). I guess everyone just needs to practice. I still have a long way to go until I get halfway as skillful as some people on this site.
