Description
Mary Read (1685-1721), one of the most famed female pirates of all time. At an early age she dressed as a boy, first by her mother in order to receive inheritance money and later as a teenager in order to join the British army. In 1720 she met "Calico" Jack Rackham and joined his crew, here she met fellow female pirate Anne Bonny. Her life as a pirate was successful but short-lived and she was arrested in November 1720. Unlike Rackham who was executed soon after his arrest, both Read and Bonny both "pleaded the belly" (claimed pregnancy) and received delayed sentences. Read died of a fever in April 1721, most likely due to complications from pregnancy. ..
