You know, that's still one of my favorite lines that I've ever used in a crack comic . . .

It does fit himcompletely! It was also the perfect line for that hilarious situation and you nailed it. What makes it especially great is that the reader doesn't even realize it was coming because it's not as cliche as other lines and then BOOM-- INYERFACEFUNNY.

Say, have you tried drawing four-frames? I find myself liking them more and more because I can fit in what I call "one-and-a-half" jokes. The first frame or two sets up the main joke, the third usually has the punchline, and the fourth has the extra joke or "half". Sometimes I only do one joke in them, but the "half" is nice because then I can stick in a surprise ending or one-liner! The manga format ones are much harder to do, so maybe that's the other reason why I like four-frames . . .

Hmm... I'm still so basic that I'm working on just constricting the joke to a specific space. xD I'm currently in the "you only have this much space so try to work with it" stage. xD I understand what you're talking about though. Four frames seem to be underused and it does give extra freedom in case you have another great idea to tack onto the joke. A lot of three stem jokes have potential to be extended in most strips.
Manga formats I can only dream of at this point, personally, but when they can be accomplished well, they're a great source for adding more visual humor into it (or expanding the joke like before). Much like your Cupid Gaara series (which were also extremely clever and hilarious). <3 But the 3 or 4 framed strips are still great in themselves even if they aren't as reader-involving as the manga format. Their ability to deliver an "instant joke" is handy.
I can't seem to put my actual thought into words but my gist is that they all have their uses and I guess it just depends on what the jokes actually call for and/or if you're interested in investing the right effort.

I definitely agree with you. I find that my feel for a comic has improved as I've experimented with differing formats. They do serve different purposes, and I like the four-frames because they are self-contained. The three-parters I did for Christmas was an interesting experiment because I had to have something going on in each "chapter" while keeping the story for each team going until the end. I could have just done it collage style, but I wanted to have cause and effect to carry over for each part. See? Now I'm not making much sense!
Well, right now I think I can only handle the 6 page manga formats, but I might extend it to 10 in the future. Layout has gotten much easier for me too, but sometimes I try to put too much into them. I'm hoping that I'll improve with that as I make more.
In any case, I hope you really give drawing comics a try!

I've been drawing comics off and on over the years and each time I do a strip there's visible improvement. Well, sometimes. There are other moments where it appears I've regressed some, but one day-- ONE FINE DAY-- I will have a set style and rhythm and be able to cause chaos in the strip/manga/comic world as much as I so desire! Bo ha ha ha! Spirits! Are! Always! Withchu!
I'm not sure I understand collage style, but I may be imagining hodgepodge.
