Blaire hadn't been able to shake Tristan Whitland all summer and even now into her freshmen year of high school. So many people she knew had significant others. Rachel was dating Landon, which Blaire was a full supporter of. She liked Rose well enough, but there was a vibe between Rachel and Landon and it didn't take having a mutant power to see. However she felt empathy for Rose not being able to have the guy she wanted. Blaire wanted Tristan but knew that beyond the long distance friendship she'd not be able to have him. He lived across the country and having a long distance boyfriend was more than she could handle. The long distance friendship was complicated with difference in time zones. As Blaire found herself being the extra wheel to her couple friends she decided to spend more time riding. Which really there were a number of reasons for her focus on riding. One was of course to have something to do that didn't make her the third wheel. But then there was the fact Tristan rode and it was one of those common factors they had to talk about for hours. Then there was the fact Sammy Boland, the geeky son to her riding instructor who was also on the police force and a friend to her dad and Uncle, had done some serious growing over the summer and caught her eyes. It was a minor distraction for Blaire.
Today happened to be one of those days she planned to spend out at the ranch. Her dad dropped her off feeling perfectly secure doing so with Officer Holly Boland to watch over his daughter and Colby had a soft spot for Sam. Blaire knew it was because Sammy's dad, Nigel had been one of her dad's best friends and had died in the line of duty when she and Sammy were only five. Probably if there was a boy in the world that Colby would approve of her dating it'd be Sammy. He was a straight A student taking AP classes with Blaire, his idea of fun being playing chess and solving math problems. Oatmeal is how Blaire described Sammy. Which yes he was a tad boring, but Blaire did find he was good for conversation about some things and he did teach her to play chess. He was also a good rider so she could always count on him to go for a ride with her and listen to her talk. Which of course since the rodeo she'd talked a bit about Tristan, though Blaire talked to anyone about the cute cowboy she'd met during the summer. Though the last few visits to the ranch Blaire had not talked much about Tristan unless of course he called her while she was there. She'd been enjoying her time riding the 24 acres of land on her blonde Arabian Chloe alongside Sammy who was riding his black Friesian named Demon. Today was no different she arrived and walked into the stable. She smiled seeing Sammy at the stall of the yearlings Jaeger and Boden a set of silver thoroughbreds born last spring. They were still too young to ride but Sammy was looking forward to breaking the pair of colts in.
Blaire smiled gently patting Chloe on the neck taking the reigns from Sam. "Hey there beautiful girl. Let's give Demon a good run. What do you say? Think we can beat him out to the oak tree on the hill today?", Blaire asked speaking sweetly to Chloe as she walked her out of the stable. Sam laughed a little watching Blaire walking away. That was a sight he always enjoyed. Demon whinnied from his stall ready to go. "Yes yes Demon. We are going.", Sam said turning his attention to his horse opening the stalls and taking the reigns. "Let's join the ladies.", Sam said followed by a couple clicking sounds as he walked with Demon. By the time he was out of the stable Blaire was already up on Chloe waiting. "Come cutie we're waiting...", Blaire teased. Sam smiled and climbed onto his saddle. "Alright so what's the game today?", Sam asked with raised eyebrow. "First to the oak tree wins. I win you have to go with me to see Justin Timberlake in concert next weekend.", Blaire said. She had two tickets and none of her female friends wanted to go since they had plans with significant others and Rose had training. Sam groaned he detested pop music. "And if I win?", Sam questioned. Blaire smiled. "Name your prize." Blaire said. "You go to the chess competition in central park with me.", Sammy countered. "Fine. You're on Sammy. The count of three. One...", Blaire started counting as Sammy moved to have Demon even with Chloe. "Two... Three!", Blaire shouted digging into Chloe a little. Chloe and Demon were both off racing for the same point at the far side of the ranch.
As the oak tree came closer in view Sam was in the lead, Demon was a fast horse and loved to race. Chloe was a good racer and fast but she was better at jumps. Demon reached the tree first. Blaire sighed and patted Chloe softly on the neck. "You ran a fine race girl. Guess chess for me.", Blaire said rolling her eyes. Sam smiled and looked over his shoulder. His smile faded seeing Blaire pout. "What's wrong? Not like you don't have a half dozen or more friends to take with you to the concert.", Sam questioned with a sigh. "They are all too busy with their relationships to go. So thought maybe you would. It's not a date, but you're my friend and really the only boy daddy would trust to go with me.”, Blaire explained making sure it was clear this was not supposed to be a date. The last thing Blaire wanted to do was give false impressions. Yes she liked Sammy, but not as a boyfriend. Sam sighed and got down from Demon letting the horse relax after the little race and graze on some of the grass. He walked over to Chloe and Blaire placing a hand on Blaire’s leg. “If you really want someone to go with you, even though you lost and still have to go to the chess tournament I’ll go with you to the concert.”, Sam said looking up at her. Blaire smiled. “Really? You’ll go?”, Blarie questioned. Sam shrugged but nodded. “And you understand it’s not a date right?”, Blaire confirmed. Sam laughed a little. “Yes I understand it’s not a date. You don’t do dates I know. Come on we can let the horses graze a little and hang out under the tree.”, Sam suggested. “Thanks Sammy?”, Blaire nodded before getting down letting Chloe graze a little as she went and stretched out under the oak tree.
Sam didn’t care that it wasn’t technically a date or that he’d have to put up with pop music, it was a chance to be alone with Blaire so he’d take it plus it made her smile. He patted Chloe on the neck before laying down on the grass next to Blaire. “The sky is so beautiful today. Look that cloud kind of looks like a horse.”, Blaire commented pointing up at the sky. Sam looked where she was pointing but then turned his head to look at her smiling. “Yeah beautiful.”, Sam commented. Blaire turned her head and rolled her eyes at him smiling. “You aren’t even looking at the sky Sammy.”, Blaire said. “Why look at the sky when I could look at you? You’re a lot prettier than anything the sky has going on.”, Sammy countered still smiling. Blaire giggled shaking her head a little. “You’re getting better at the whole flirting thing Sammy. Now just focus that on one of those girls at school who’ve started to finally take notice of you and you’ll have a girlfriend in no time.”, Blaire said. Sammy shrugged laughing a little letting his hand brush against hers. “And if I don’t want to date one of the other girls at school?”, Sam asked. Blaire giggled shaking her head looking at him. “Sammy, I like you. I really do, but I’m not going to be anyone’s girlfriend and you know that.”, Blaire said. Sam nodded. “I know and I don’t care. If I had a girlfriend then I wouldn’t get to spend time with you and I’d rather be around you.”, Sam stated.
