He parked two blocks over to keep the four not going to the Academy close but still safe distance. He left the car running. “Alright guys we’ll be back shortly. I’ll keep the engine running. If we need the backup I’ll call on the com-link”, Landon said grabbing the wireless communicator from the dash and putting it in his ear. “Just be safe.”, Cora Lee said. Landon nodded. Rose reached and took his wrist a worried look in her eyes. He knew that look, it was the same look Rachel gave him before he left the club to take on Wanda the night before. “Seriously with Howlett women and worrying about my stupid ass.”, Landon said shaking his head. “I’ll be fine.”, Landon said smiling taking his arm back and closing the driver’s door and moving to lock arms with his cousin Lily who was holding hands with Tommy. So Landon, Lily, Tommy, and Billy walked the two blocks to the Academy. The stopped at the end of the sidewalk looking up to the large white building. The twins took a deep breath and looked to Landon. “So how do we want to do this?”, Billy asked. Landon cleared his throat as he was thinking how to do this that didn’t involve starting trouble, and also would give Tommy a chance to run in and get his and Billy’s things.
Back at the van Rose kept tumbling Landon’s final words in her mind ‘Howlett women’. She knew her cousin had been really worried last night, and with how Rachel rushed to hug him when he came out of the office. It just made Rose start to wonder. Did Rachel like Landon the same way she did? And worse did Landon like Rachel back? She kept reminding herself that at the dance he’d explained any possible questionable behavior away with simple logic. But as she thought more on it she started to frown, since the dance there just seemed to be something between Landon and Rachel. For the last couple years there felt like there was something Landon was holding back from her yet when she saw him around Rachel his body language didn’t suggest that there was that same distance. And then at the club when he sang ‘Take Me To Church’, she’d noticed the subtle movements of his eyes and how often they fell on her and Rachel. Rose shook her head not wanting to think about it right now. The Alston twins sat in the back looking out the window just waiting. Cora Lee had pulled out her cell phone and was furiously sending a text message, to who Rose didn’t know. Cora Lee was texting Malcolm, hoping he’d get it and be able to possibly not let her brother get hurt. ‘Sparky, My bro & cousin along with your cousins approaching Academy to talk to Kim. Please, if you can keep peace.’ Cora Lee typed and sighed hitting send.
Landon sighed and looked to the others. “Alright we call Lily’s mom out to us. Tommy you find a way in to get your things and fast.”, Landon stated. Malcolm grumbled awake to the buzzing of his phone. He unlocked it and read the text from Cora Lee. ‘I’m on it. Thanks for the heads up gorgeous.’ Malcolm texted back. He rolled out of bed and looked out his window and sure enough there was Landon, Lily, Tommy and Billy on the side walk. Malcolm sighed trying to come up with a plan on how to help them. He kicked Merrick’s mattress. “Merrick up. I don’t know how much you care or not. But your sister, cousin and my cousins are out front. Looks like we are going to find out sooner than later what happened last night.”, Malcolm said. Merrick growled but opened his eyes and rolled out of his bed, his short dirty-blonde hair a mess. He looked out through the blinds and there they were. “They step foot on the property your aunt will kill them. How’d you know they were down there?”, Merrick asked. “Cora Lee texted me. She wants me to make sure they don’t get hurt, somehow.”, Malcolm explained. Merrick grumbled. “Fine. I’ll help you. I’m not looking to see my sister get hurt. So what do we do?”, Merrick agreed looking to his roommate.
Malcolm quickly texted Tommy, ‘Cora Lee gave heads up. Merrick willing to help. What do you need from this side to avoid death?’. Tommy blinked feeling the buzz of his phone in the pocket of the borrowed track pants from Landon and quickly pulled it out to read the message. He smiled. ‘Need distraction. Lily and Landon want to talk to Kim and tell her what my mom has been hiding. And I need to get in for mine and Billy’s things.’ Tommy texted back. ‘We’re on it, we’ll get your things and take them to the back entrance, get there in five. I’ll send Merrick to distract.’ Malcolm replied. “Alright I’m going to get my cousins things and meet Tommy out back so they can take their stuff. I need you to go out front, get your mom and try to do crowd control. Can you do that?”, Malcolm asked reaching for the door. Merrick nodded. “Alright, I’m on it.”, Merrick said heading out past Malcolm heading for his mom’s room. Landon noticed Tommy texting and raised an eyebrow. “What’s going on? You have someone on the inside?”, Landon asked. Tommy nodded. “Yes. But their name stays private for now, sorry.”, Tommy explained. “Alright. Feel a little better to have someone on the inside at least.”, Landon agreed not sure who was their inside guy or guys. Malcolm crept down the hall to his cousins room and started packing up their personal belongings to hand off to Tommy.
While he did this Merrick went to his parents room and knocked opening the door a crack. “Mom…you need to get up. And you need to be quiet about it. We have a…situation..”, Merrick whispered. Kim grumbled in her bed and sat up looking at the one eyes of her son’s that was peeking through the slightly opened bedroom door. Kim scratched the back of her short dirty blonde hair as she yawned and got out of bed and opened the door closing it quietly to not wake her husband. “What’s going on Merrick?”, Kim asked in a yawn. It’d been a long night wondering what the hell was going on with Billy and Tommy apparently turning against their own mother and attacking their cousin. “We need to be super quiet alright. We can’t wake anyone else up.”, Merrick said in a whisper. Kim looked confused now. “Um alright so what is going on then?”, Kim whispered back. “Lily is outside along with Landon, Thomas and William.”, Merrick explained grabbing his mom’s wrist to head quietly down the hall. “What? How do you know that?”, Kim asked following her son. “My window looks out front mom. I know Lily chose the X-Men over us, whatever, but she’s still my triplet and her being out there with Thomas and William…after what they did. I don’t want Miss Maximoff to see them, she’ll lose it and you know it.”, Merrick explained trying to keep Malcolm’s cover unblown. Kim nodded. “So you go find out what they want and maybe it won’t be a fight.”, Merrick suggested handing his mom her coat as they reached the bottom of the stairs. Kim tilted her head to the side and smiled at her son reaching up, having become shorter than him years ago, and ruffled his shagging dirty-blonde hair. “You are not the bad person you portray to the world.”, Kim commented taking the jacket. Merrick rolled his eyes and his mother still smiled. “I won’t tell.”, Kim said softly before heading out the front door.
Seeing the door open Landon could feel his heart stop, he wasn’t sure what Tommy’s inside contacts were doing. This could be an ambush and them being betrayed. Lily tightened her grip on her cousin’s arm knowing Tommy would have to take the chance to run and get their things. The four blinked as they saw it was Kim, still in pajama pants but wearing her winter jacket that stepped outside. ‘Now.’ Malcolm texted leaving the items outside and shutting the door running to the front of the house to see how this plan was going. Tommy felt the buzz of his phone and didn’t need to check to know it was time. He let go of Lily’s hand and in a blink of an eye zoomed away to loop to the back door and gather the two duffle bags his cousin had managed to get. He checked and made sure nothing important was missing before zooming back, this time passing Kim who’d started down the walk. He stopped next to Lily handing a bag to Billy. Kim blinked looking at the bags though realized Tommy must have used his speed to get inside, again, and get their things. “You know that you four shouldn’t be here. I haven’t raised the alarm because I still love my daughter. So talk fast.”, Kim said folding her arms. Merrick had crept to the front window and was joined by Malcolm as they peeked out the blinds to watch what was about to happen. Kim looked at the four waiting. “Well someone talk, now.”, Kim insisted.
Billy looked to Tommy who was looking to Lily. Lily was frozen she wasn’t sure how to speak to her mother anymore. She bit her lip and looked to Landon. Landon nodded and took a step forward, Lily keeping a tight grip on his arm not wanting to risk losing him. Kim turned her attention to the near clone of her dear cousin David, he was just missing the piercings. “Yes Landon? You speak for them?”, Kim asked. “Yes, I speak for my team. You know that last night the twins helped my team bring James Logan Howlett aka Wolverine back to this world. I somehow doubt that Wanda told you the truth, so I’m here to give you the truth. She has lied to you and the world for fifteen years. She knows why my father and Uncle Demitri stopped speaking to you but to she’ll never tell you.”, Landon stated. Kim narrowed her eyes. “That’s a big gamble you’re taking Landon. Come here and tell me that my friend, my team leader has been lying to me for fifteen years. And you think I’m going to listen to you because you dangle your father and my children’s half brother as the metaphoric carrot?”, Kim questioned. “It’s not a gamble. Because I’m telling the truth. And they aren’t a metaphoric carrot. You are a Bryant, being an Acolyte will never change who you are inside, Cousin. And nothing is more important to a Bryant than family. My grandparents told me stories of how you and my father were as close as I am with Lily and my little sister Cora Lee. You were less cousins and more siblings. That’s a bond you can’t ignore. And I’m offering you the knowledge of why my father has been forcing himself to ignore that bond.”, Landon countered.
Kim smiled lightly shaking her head. “God damn you are David’s son to the core aren’t you? Alright speak. Prove to me.”, Kim said. Landon smirked. “Indeed I am. Fifteen years ago the Xavier Institute burned to the ground and members were killed and taken captive. History tells us this was the FOH, the truth tells us it was you and the other Acolytes.”, Landon said pointing at her. Kim blinked. “What? No. You are mistaken Landon. We never have implemented a full scale attack against the X-Men.”, Kim said shaking her head. “Really? Because my surveillance footage from the night of the attack says otherwise. As does Logan Howlett and every other X-Men and Haven member.”, Landon said reaching into his jacket pocket for his tablet. He pulled up the footage and brought it up so that it displayed like a hologram surrounding them. He smiled mentally thanking Forge for the tech upgrade. He paused the footage as Pyro sent flames at Tanner Alston. “Last time I checked, that mutant shooting the flames is St John Allder aka Pyro a member of the Acolytes and the mutant he is about to kill is Tanner Alston aka Creature an X-Men.”, Landon said hitting play taking a breath to ignore the death of Tanner and then paused again as Pyro picked up Sadira’s limp pregnant body. “And this looks like St John taking an extremely pregnant Sadria Alston aka Dreamer hostage after she was shot multiple times with tranquilizers to stop her and her unborn twins from fighting back.”, Landon explained ending the video.
Landon pulled from Lily’s grasp to stand inches from Kim and leaned slightly to speak only to her. “You know all about someone taking away your ability to fight back. And about people putting your children’s lives in danger.”, Landon whispered before stepping back. Kim clenched her jaw holding back tears from watching the video and being painfully reminded of Calvin Shadow, but she nodded. “And what does Pyro’s actions have to do with anything else?”, Kim finally questioned. “Because someone who never lies, John Howlett, gave us the truth after seeing this footage and knowing we knew what really happened. Adien and Blake tried to capture Uncle Kurt and by association Aunt Isis, they failed. Christian attacked and captured Uncle Mikali and Aunt Annai. Then you, along with a large number of soldiers managed to capture Logan. Which all in all wouldn’t have gotten my father involved no matter how much he considered Uncle Mikali and Aunt Isis family. But Wanda wanted him and the others in the Haven on her side against the X-Men. I can’t blame her, they are powerful mutants. But they denied your ‘friend’. She doesn’t like being told no. Aiden and Blake decided they would force my father and the others to fall into line by taking my mother hostage.”, Landon explained. Kim looked confused. “What would taking Candy Girl hostage do for anyone?”, Kim questioned her mind hearing mother she thought of her former friend that had given birth to Landon. Landon glared and clenched a fist at the mention of Candy Girl. “I don’t mean that hypocrite egg donor. I mean my true mother the woman who has loved me and raised me. The woman my father loves and would kill for.”, Landon countered. Then it sunk in.
“So you’re explanation for your father’s actions of cutting me from his life is that my brother-in-laws are dumb assholes?”, Kim questioned. “No. My explanation is that you and Christian knew they did it, knew where they were keeping my mom and wouldn’t tell him or return her to him. I know you don’t remember what you did, Wanda used her powers to alter reality but part of her power was countered allowing the X-Men and Haven to remember what really happened. So I get it you don’t remember knowing they took my mom or that your fear of Wanda stopped you from doing what was right, from helping family.”, Landon explained. Kim shook her head. “No. If I knew they’d taken her, I’d have kicked their asses and brought her back to David. I knew even back then what she meant to him. No fear or respect for Wanda would have stopped me from that. My love for your father…he’s as you said more brother in my heart than cousin…I wouldn’t have done nothing.”, Kim argued shaking her head. Landon raised an eyebrow with a small laugh. “So your stance is I’m wrong. That John Alexander Howlett Jr, the 155 year old mutant known for being honorable lied to my face? That James Logan Howlett, who spent the last fifteen years in a limbo dimension created, accidentally, by Wanda and this other mutant altering reality lied to me? Your defense is that the Howlett brothers lied to me, to my friends which includes Rose Howlett? I suggest you go inside and you question Wanda and question your memories because the Howlett brothers would not lie to us.”, Landon countered pointing to the door of the Academy.
