Description
Beyond his father dying and his mother being taken hostage before he was born Atif’s life was fairly simple. He was raised with his twin sister by their mother Sadria Kearney as a single parent for the first seven years of their lives. During that time their mother mourned their father, but after a while decided that she should try to move on and live her life. Azriel Delaney had always kind of been around while they were growing up, but neither saw him as a ‘threat’ till the day he asked their mom out on a date. His reputation had preceded him, even to their young ears, so both he and his twin Ashley had been apprehensive about their mother dating someone who ‘got around’ like Azriel did, or at least that’s what they’d heard from Aurelia, Alison and even Colby. But as it turned out something about their mom had flipped a switch for the once hound dog Azriel. Eventually Azriel became their step-dad and was the father to their half brother Darren. Over all it turned out to be a good thing, it added stability to Atif and Ashley’s world they didn’t have before. Azriel never asked them to call him dad because he never wanted to take Tanner’s place. Atif found that to be an admirable quality.Like most of his generation Atif spent his early years at the Haven daycare under the watchful eyes of Aislinn, Morpheus really, and Solangel. It was his time at that daycare where he formed bonds of friendship that he still holds to this day. In Landon he had found a best friend, a boy in the sea of estrogen they seemed to live in for their generation. Eventually the group of friends formed a ‘gang’ in a manner of speaking, mostly just trying to solve mysteries. It started as trying to uncover why Landon’s dad and Lily’s mom had stopped talking, but the more they searched the more they found it was tied to the attack on the X-Men. Which lead them to start investigating that since it always seemed odd that their dad and Rose’s dad could have fallen to humans. But the years never gave them more insight to the truth. The adults never wanted to talk about what happened. And they were pretty sure that history’s record was a fabrication. Atif knew this was a bit of an obsession for Landon, the rest of them just went along with it out of curiosity and to make sure Landon didn’t get himself in trouble.
But as they grew things changed, they became teenagers. Life would never be the same, this much Atif knew. As the seer of the group, a mutation that made many of the adults think he was a reincarnation of his namesake, he had seen the future. He couldn’t see the past, but the future came in clear. He knew things were going to change in their group; the dynamic wouldn’t be what it was forever. Worse yet he’d seen how the hunt for the truth was going to cause more damage then they’d ever thought. His visions never told him what the truth was, just showed him how finding the truth would alter everything. Friends would become foes, and Landon would find himself in a world of trouble he had not expected. Despite knowing the future Atif stuck by Landon, he just seemed to hope he could somehow keep Landon from the danger he knew surrounded this mystery. And secretly he hoped his efforts would make the already touchy subject of his love life less from being more of an issue than it already was.
He didn’t keep it a secret that he held no interest in the opposite sex. The day he realized this was when Cora Lee kissed him, sure it was a dare, but it was still a kiss. Atif literally threw up. He had to explain to Cora Lee that it was nothing against her personally, sure it was weird to be kissed by the little sister of his best friend but the issue was that he just didn’t like girls. Cora Lee was the first person he told he was gay. She didn’t seem bothered by it and encouraged him to tell the rest of the gang and his family. Which he did and no one batted an eyelash. His step-dad joked that now he’d have to wait till Darren was a teenager to pass on his skills for dating women, but he always assured him that gay, straight, human, mutant he loved Atif as if he was his own and would protect him from any hate-mongers of the world.
The only thing ‘in the closet’ about Atif was his boyfriend. He had met him by chance or fate if you want to go that route, during a science lab. They had gone to the same school their whole lives, but never noticed each other or spoke before they were made lab partners. At first there was awkwardness to them working together; William was after all the son of the infamous mutant known as Scarlet Witch. Atif knew lots of her dirty little secrets from all the investigation the gang had done on the past. But Atif realized that he shouldn’t judge or treat him differently because of whom his mother was, that would be like William treating him different because his mother was the mutant known as Dreamer. So the two ended up becoming friends at first, but it was friendship both knew they couldn’t really share. Since the Institute and the Academy were rivals in regards to mutant schools, plus all the bad blood between the adults of both sides.
However friendship flourished into something more the day in the library of the high school. Atif would remember that day forever. They were just having a philosophical conversation about how people always judge what they don’t know or understand. They discussed going back through time how different skin colors and religions were where it started. And now these still were an issue, but new issues were around like mutants and homosexuality. It was one that topic was brought up that they both discovered something they’d never had guessed about the other, they were both gay. Both had just figured the other was straight because of the company they kept. William always saw Atif in the halls with Lily or Rose or Cora Lee, which Atif explained they’d been friends since diapers and he loved them each like sisters. Atif had guessed William was straight because of how Josalyn and even Emma were always on his arms. Which William explained that he thought of them as sisters even if they didn’t want to accept that truth.
So they shared their stories of when they realized they weren’t into girls. And both laughed at how similar the situations had been. Cora Lee had been dared to kiss Atif at a party, where as Josalyn had kissed William without a dare needed. They had a great laugh at it all. William had told his family that he was gay and really they’d accepted it, after all Thomas was heterosexual so it’s not like their family name would die or whatever. It seemed Josalyn and Emma still maintained their crushes on him and didn’t want to believe he liked guys. Through their friendship and comradely something more had flourished. And it was that day when they shared their ‘secretes’ that William dared to steal a kiss. It wasn’t either of their first officially kisses, but it was their first kiss with another guy. And that just seemed to seal the deal; it was an affirmation that they could never have liked girls. From that point forward Atif and William had started dating. But because of the bad blood between their schools and parents neither told anyone about their relationship. It was the only thing in the closet about their sexuality.
It killed Atif to have to sneak around, but something about it made it a little more thrilling. He had lucked out that despite Landon’s curious nature he never questioned when Atif would just disappear for hours every Saturday. It was only on Saturdays that William and Atif could both get away from their schools. They’d go to the movies or remote areas of the park. Today was going to be the park. Atif grabbed his jacket and gave an uneasy goodbye to Landon before leaving the room. He wasn’t sure how much longer Landon would stay uninterested in what he was sneaking off to do. But for now he was just grateful. Once past the security gate of the school he walked then began to run down the block to three blocks over where William was waiting on a motorcycle. It was true they were both too young to even have a learners permit, but that didn’t really stop William from ‘borrowing’ his father’s black with flame 2022 Harley Davidson Sportster from the garage. William at least looked old enough to have a license and didn’t drive carelessly so they never attracted attention of authorities.
Atif smiled and his green eyes seemed to shine a little as he saw William there, a picnic basket tied to the back of the motorcycle holding out a helmet to him. “Come on, let’s go.”, William greeted. Atif took the helmet and before he could put it on was startled as William gave him a ‘hello’ kiss. Atif’s cheeks turned almost as red as his hair. They typically didn’t have public displays of affection just to avoid someone from either of their schools seeing them. “William…”, Atif stammered as he tried to keep his heart from racing too much. But even a little kiss like that from William made his knees go weak and his heart start racing. “Do you know how adorable you look when you blush? Your hair and your cheeks practically match.”, William said with a smirk. Atif shook his head and put the helmet on. “You know some day your dad is going to realize his motorcycle goes missing on Saturdays.”, Atif commented as he got onto the bike behind William. “I love my dad, but he’s not that bright darling. I also cast a spell to create an illusion of the bike still in the garage. So he’ll never know. Now hold on tight.”, William replied before pulling back on the throttle and speeding away from the curb. Atif let out a small yelp, being caught off guard before he tightly wrapped his arms around William’s waist. As they drove on he cared less and less about what someone might think seeing them together, and instead leaned in and rested his face against William’s back just content to be holding him that close
