That's an incredible piece of work, really fantastic details and color, and I think the background is perfectly suiting(if it had too many details, I think it would throw off all the characters too much)

I dunno, not having a background doesn't seem all that big a deal in this case. I think having one would just clutter things up and spoil the image. After all, say for example you had some sort of city setting as the background. But since the lighting in this image is coming from below, that wouldn't make much sense. XD
