THE ANATOMY TUTORIAL THAT MOST OF YOU SEEM TO WANT SO BAD.

Oh my god, I dont know why you people want me to teach you anatomy, because:

a.) I'm a horrible teacher
b.) I suck at anatomy myself. >:

BEFORE anyone decides to bash me for being so inaccurate and saying "YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG, BETCH." I would like to stress the fact that I am a self taught artist and have never taken any formal training in art. Everything I know is through my own experience, and anything in this tutorial is my own personal view on anatomy, and how I think it would be easier for other people to learn my method. Just as I stated in my tutorial, I found it weird using the head stacking method-- SO with this, I found a more helpful way to measure limbs without continuously drawing little circles.

It'd be really great if I actually help some of you out with this, so feel free to leave me a comment stating so. :] Those comments really make my day.

Also, feel free to link others to this page if you find it useful, and think that others might want to see it. :] Please ask before posting this on other sites first, and if you do, I need you to credit me, because I poured long hours of thought into this and I dont want it getting stolen. xD;;

Love always,

Thanks for this tutorial, it was really helpful oAo I thought the head stacking method was really weird too. It made the person look kinda stretched o_o The cheat sheet is genius. Now I won't have to go measuring the length of my arms on myself when drawing a picture.

I don't know why you say you failed for this, because I think you're awesome. I learned alot from reading your comments xD

Omfg, I'm so glad I was able to help. D:
I think the cheat sheet is the single most useful things in the entire tutorial. xD ahaha. I dont think much of everything else is important.

;3; B'aww.. thank you veryyy much, dear. I'm just happy that I was able to help you along your path to improvement.

nice tut hope you make a foreshortening one because foreshortening brings life to your drawings and you can make dynamic poses and stuff!

Of course. What do you think I watch you for? You're more than just a pretty avatar, you know XD

I especially like how you talk about proportions and the human figure as a ball and joint doll. Very good, I think : )

You're very welcome.

BTW, I would really like to do a livestream with you in the chat room. You're like the main person I want to chat with... so if you tell me sometime this weekend/next when you will be free to catch it, I'll see if I can make it happen : )

I think the ball-join doll helped me a lot through my years of practice. *v*

Oh, I've been trying to catch your livestream! D:
Well, I'll be free now? :3 Sometime today? Or tomorrow!
It would be so much easier if I had your msn, though. xD;; if its okay.
That way I can message you in real-time and you'll be able to let me know if you're gonna livestream anytime soon. x3

Doominatrix In reply to ??? [2009-09-20 08:13:12 +0000 UTC]

Omg yey thank you for this!

I've always used stick figures, but I get stuck on poses I often have to look up references, but i'm trying to lean away from that.

I seriously need an anatomy make-over and learn some damned perspectives ahaha. xD

Anyway! Great tutorial! Other than learnin' basic anatomy, what else will help with poses? Those lil wooden figure models? :3

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

owdof In reply to Doominatrix [2009-09-20 15:22:21 +0000 UTC]

awww, you're welcome. :3 I'm just happy to help other people along the way!

Ah, no no! Reference is good. :] I am allowing you to use reference, because It helped me a bunch as I was starting my early days in perspective/foreshortening. Sometimes copying a complicated pose from somewhere is good for practice, and it helps give you more ideas when you actually draw a serious piece. I'm not saying you should copy a picture EXACTLY, either. Just use some for sketch practice, and then when you want to draw something serious, take the poses you've previously sketched out and see if you can mesh some together for an interesting pose. :] Its good to look at other people's work, get inspired, and start your own piece from that.

I think observing other people is good for practice. Once you've gotten how long the bones are, then you're gonna want to see how they bend, how they DONT bend, etc. Going out into a crowd of people and sketching someone sitting, or walking, or just standing would give you a good idea on how someones posture can really bring out ones character. :] I dont particularly find the wooden models to be very useful, because most of them cant even have their legs bent up to their chest, or do a horizontal split.

A good exercise is also drawing a certain pose, and drawing it again at another angle. It gives you some variety, and lets you think in 3D. See, when most people draw, they just dish out lines and call it done. They dont realize that a single line could make a difference and have their picture appear more lifelike, or 3D. When someone draws, they should be thinking of their drawing as something 3D-- or 2D, in most cases. :] One should be able to sense the depth of a picture with lineart, not depend on the coloring of a picture to make it look deep. The lines have to look deep. (unless of course, you're doing realism. xD) Your lines can also tell the viewer how far or near the object is.

For example, a closer object may be more defined, so its lines are thicker. Then as for farther objects, they arent in much focus, so their lines are thinner.

Doominatrix In reply to owdof [2009-09-20 18:53:02 +0000 UTC]

Ooooh yeah there we go more life-like. <3

Cause I'm also self-taught and don't look at the whole 'how to draw' stuff. But nowadays I want to improve my poses/anatomy so I go look at stock photos from like photography and sketch from there. I never took a decent art class since teachers don't care about school ahaha. But I would love to improve my art. I only do it as a hobby anyway it's not like I'm planning to be pro or make money out of my art or anything since it's just for entertainment. xD

Anyway!
Thank you soooooo much for this tutorial!
Now go make more! xD

owdof In reply to Doominatrix [2009-09-23 09:02:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, I wont stop you at looking at books. :] I find that they can be a helpful source sometimes. (just not those thin "how to draw manga" books, because they only teach you how to draw in the very generic, uninteresting manga style.)

It was my pleasure to work on this tutorial, and I'm so glad that I was able to help quite a few people along their way to becoming a better artist. *v*
I'll try to work on more tutorials soon! Perhaps an extended version of this would be good. :]
