Description
They say your shoulders
look lonesome, hunched like
a paper lantern girdling a candle -
they say you're cowering, but
your bones have only ever
waged war from the inside.
They say your soul
looks lonesome, aloof like
a stray cat refusing kibble -
they say your lungs are hidebound
wings over a fleshy heart, thin like
a threadbare, overused lie.
But that's not it -
loneliness -
a cold, loose handshake -
a never-ending yellow brick road -
so far the sun sets over it,
so far mountains rise above it
so far that in silence
it trembles around you, dances
like fireflies guiding lovers home,
or a weak pulse wielding life.
So far you only see the other side
when you blink out and breathe
no more.
