We'll forgo the questions on just why they're trying to browse the web on a dirt patch in the middle of the countryside. No doubt it seemed like a great idea at the time. Still doesn't explain the fire...

the battery went bad on it, and I couldn't afford to replace it, so I just kept using it. one day the darned thing started smoking and next thing Iknew Ihad a melted heap

This terrifies me about laptops in general. One reason why it's important to register your purchase with the manufacturer - they'll let you know about recalls!

Actually, it wasn't that at all. A couple of months before, I was leaving the house when the strap broke on my laptop case and the whole thing went flying down a flight of concrete stairs. I was amazed the thing even ran after that. It was kind of inevitable that the whole thing would go eventually, but apparently the battery had taken the brunt of the fall. Like I said, I couldn't afford to replace it, so I was stuck with the whole mess
I just don't know what went wrong!
