Description
This tutorial explains how a buyer and an artist can set up payment using deviantART's Commission Widget. Through this process, the artist receives CASH through PayPal. The artist DOES NOT receive any points. There is a two week delay between when the buyer sends payment and when the artist receives the funds through PayPal.
If you see any typos, please let me know
As you can see, this process is needlessly complicated. To see a proposal for a far simpler system, refer to:

what are instances that some of the people who commission me get there money back?
(sorry for my bad english)
I mean, someone commission me for 1000 and just 2days they get there money back and I was shocked...
I finished the commission I send the files the user requested on the day I receive the request and 2 days the money(points) was transfered back to the user who commission me.
thank God that the user noticed it and she send it thru "Give Points" instead of commission widget.
now, the worst thing is I can't convert it to USD :/
and I am also looking forward... what if users I commission in the future is not like that user?
what if they take advantage and decide to keep there money?
what can I do?
I was thinking of striking them copyright notice if they use my work, but how can I see where they use it?
If i can see my works? How can I strike copyright notice with the help of deviantart?
sorry for so many questions...
Happy new year and Good day !

The only way I'm aware of that a buyer can get a commission payment back is if they petition the staff, and even then they only have a two-week window to do so before the money becomes 100% yours. However the artist should also have the authority to issue a refund if you hit the right button (though I don't recall off the top of my head where that is).
You should be in constant contact with the buyer when undertaking a commission. If they initiate a refund without talking with you it may be because they haven't gotten the response they expected. To me a commission is as much about open communication as it is about the quality of the art.
~I was thinking of striking them copyright notice
I don't know what that means.
The help desk may be able to answer your questions more succinctly than I can, I'm not familiar with the refund process.

"As an artist, upon accepting a Commission request, the earnings will be deposited into your My Earnings account. At this point they will be held in Clearing for 14 days to permit a review of the transaction. After the 14 day period, when approved, you may withdraw your earnings via PayPal, Check, or as deviantART Points. See your My Earnings account for additional information on these options." i don't understand... what happens after 14 days? am i supposed to start on the commission right now? or in 14 days? also: when do i receive the points?

It is my understanding artists are encouraged to start on the commission right away, but there's no rule for that. I've commissioned artists through the widget and it has taken months to receive the completed artwork (due to scheduling constraints and scale of the artwork). Some artists prefer to wait two weeks for the transaction to clear before starting on the art. Some only request payment after completing the work. It comes down to personal preference, just so long as that is communicated between the artists and the commissioner. The only scheduling constraint should be between you and the commissioner - dA is just a facilitator.
You receive the points 14 days after you accept the commission (click the green "Yes" button). You have to go to this page to get the points though:

So if I want to recieve 320 (3.20$) for a commission, in the widget I have to set the price in 400
?

If you sold a commission for 400 points you would receive 320 points or $4

Uh, I almost forgot, can I receive the money if I'm not a premium member?
I've read that you can't but I think that was for the older widget or something like that, I just wanted to make it sure

The commission widget should work the same for everyone, whether you have a PM or not. iirc, the only difference is if you withdraw your earnings as a check, then non-PMs have to pay a $5 processing fee.

Hello, I have a problem, I deleted my commission widget before deleting the existing commissions, and now when I try to reinstall it I can't remove the commission options that I had. (I tried the way that you would normally delete a commission but it does not work, and I can't add any more either) Do you have any advise on how to fix it?

That's a bug when you first add the widget. Refresh the page and the options will appear

Why do we need to put "everyone ignore this?"
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to TheOtherKilroy [2014-08-22 01:43:47 +0000 UTC]
That's just what I do, you don't have to. However, all your watchers that are following your "Activity" will be notified about the commission, so I prefer to be clear and tell them in the description they don't need to look at it.

TheOtherKilroy In reply to parallellogic [2014-08-22 22:57:57 +0000 UTC]
So... wait a minute... I'm still a little confused, sorry. If we're posting up a commission widget, wouldn't we, in the description box, describe the nature and price of the commissions? Why would we tell people to ignore our commission widget if we want people to use it?
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be rude, really, I just really don't understand.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
parallellogic In reply to TheOtherKilroy [2014-08-23 15:09:36 +0000 UTC]
There are two ways to use the commission widget. The intended way is how you describe: as an artist, list what you want to draw and wait for someone to request that. This procedure works best for fixed priced items.
The way I tend to use it is to discuss with the artist first exactly what I want through notes and then ask them to put up a commission listing so I can pay them. I use this process because the stuff I commission is usually variably priced based on what is drawn. The widget isn't well suited to this type of operation, so I made a tutorial to explain it to artists who would otherwise work exclusively through PayPal. When the artist is posting a listing for just one buyer, that's when you want the rest of your followers to ignore the notification.

Hello there ♥
This is a really useful tutorial! I will use it whenever it comes to using the Commission widget.
But I have one question. I want to fix the prices for my commissions on the widget (since they're at a much lower price), but I'm not allowed to do it. I've tried adding a new item to see if that works, but I don't succeed.
May you tell me how to fix them?

parallellogic In reply to YagiMatsu [2014-08-10 22:00:51 +0000 UTC]
What do you mean by "don't succeed"? The widget is a little glitchy - after you add it to your page you will need to refresh the page before the pencil icon will list "edit widget" and allow you to change prices

By "don't succeed", I mean that I'm not able to change the prices.
But thanks for the tips. The "Edit Widget" thing appeared, so I will edit my commission prices now. ^^

Ok, I have a question. i have 3000 points. What if, i sent them to my friend to then get them to purchase a 'commission'? i read somewhere its illigel, but what about he uses his own points, to buy it, and then as soon as he does that, I give him 3000 points?

However, I don't know how much effort they actually put into tracking down the legitimacy of every commission
