Description
Every night I fall asleep remembering the pain he had caused me.Every night I get the same nightmare of the family that I find hard to remember.
Every morning I wake up paranoid.
"Kamenosuke! Up now! You are late for your training!" Turtle* says. I roll over…
And start falling.
"Shit!" I say, landing face first. It didn't hurt. The illusion of pain was the first lesson in my training.
"Kamenosuke, what are you doing on the ground?" Turtle asks me.
"You tell me. You're the one who woke me up.," I say, spitting blood to the ground.
"True… But why were you in the tree to being with?"
I shrug.
"I don't know. It's more natural to me, I guess," I say.
"Good. As a shadow assassin, it is right for you to chose a place less noticeable. Like the top of a tree," Turtle says with a smirk.
"Of course it is," I say. "Can we start training soon?"
"Yes. Extend your wings," Turtle says.
I nod and extend the black wings that have formed over the time that I have been here. Then, of all times, Turtle's phone goes off.
He doesn't get the chance to say hello or anything. The caller just talks.
And talks.
And talks…
Turtle glances at me once, near the end of the call, and when the caller finally stops talking he says "Yes, I understand." And he shuts the phone.
"Why did you look at me near the end of that?" I ask.
"Training is cancelled today. Go meet with Tarao-san, he will tell you why," Turtle says.
"Another thing for Monochromacity?"
Turtle nods. His face gives nothing away.
"It's a girl. She's threatening exposing them. Said her name was… was it Setsuna Ishikawa?" he asks to himself.
My blood runs cold.
Why did I have this bad feeling all of a sudden?
"Go out and get the job done," Turtle says. I nod, and rush to my room.
I quickly get dressed to meet with Tarao-san, the leader of Monochromacity. I pull a cloth mask over my face. I glance at the metal bracers lying on the floor.
Did I need them for this? Not likely. I run out of my room, leaving them on the floor.
"Don't forget to use your wings," Turtle says to me as I pull on my boots. I roll my eyes and pull down the mask.
"I'll use them when necessary. For a quick get-away perhaps?" I say sarcastically.
"Of course. Be careful."
I tense, hearing what would seem to be emotion in my sensei's voice. I shake it off though, leading myself to believe I had imagined it.
With my blade and a shuriken up my sleeve, I'm confident as I walk out the door and to Monochromacity.
Ten minutes later, I'm in front of the building, waiting for the man who called. Tarao-san.
"Kamenosuke-kun! Good to see you! How have you been?" He says too cheerfully when he sees me waiting.
"I have had better days. Tarao-san, I am here for information on my assignment, not to get to know each other," I say with dead seriousness.
"Yes… Of course. Here," he says, handing me and address. I memorize it quickly.
"How long is this going to take?" Tarao-san asks me.
"I do not know for sure. These things cannot be rushed."
"Yes, of course. Oh, about this girl, don't harm her too bad. I just want her scared. I'm civil enough to not wish death upon her. She lost her family not too long ago," Tarao-san says. I nod and leave. Tarao stalks away, like the tiger in his name-sake, muttering to himself. He has absolutely no confidence in me what-so-ever. I leave my mask hanging around my neck, like a scarf.
Someone bumps into me, but I keep walking.
"Hey! Where d'you think you're goin'?" he says. I turn around, but walk backwards, putting distance between me and the kid who had at least twice as much muscle mass as I did.
"I'm going to a friend's house," I say casually. I didn't want this guy to get near me. I wasn't scared, I just didn't want to waste energy on this idiot.
"Well, not without answering to me first," he says. He staggers as he advances towards me, so I can tell he's drunk. He looked not too much older than me, and he appeared to be one of those people that dyed their hair a lot. This guy's was a mess, even though it looked naturally black with a few streaks of neon colors in it.
"And who are you, exactly?" I ask.
"Kaito. But my friends call me thief," he says.
"Uh-huh. Well, Kaito, I think I'm going to be going now…"
Kaito had grabbed the mask and pulled me. He twisted me around and pinned my arms behind my back.
I roll my eyes. This guy is an idiot. I easily twist myself out of his grip, but he unexpectedly was prepared. He tugs on my mask again, but this time, I choke. Kaito swiftly moves out of the open and into an alley.
My breaths become gasps. Turtle had warned me about this.
It's dark in the alley, but my eyes have been trained to be accustomed to the darkness quickly. As soon as they do, I see the flash of a blade. I feel it against my skin, but no pain.
"What are you some kinda freak? Do you not feel pain or something!?"Kaito says somewhat hysterically. The knife shot into my side and my back arched. Something hit home and Kaito started laughing.
This is the closest I've felt to helpless. I couldn't do anything.
I felt Kaito's fist hit my side once… twice… three times. I knew this drunk would kill me.
I thought I was the assassin…
"Kaito stop!" a girl says.
Kaito pauses and turns to look at the girl.
"Setsuna, go home. This doesn't involve you," Kaito says. I jolt and fall against the wall in front of me, using it as support. I glance at the girl. She was young, maybe 15 or 16. Blue eyes, black hair. And her eyes blazed with anger at Kaito. Why was she protecting me? She didn't even know me.
"I'm not going home until you leave that guy alone! Why do you have to fight everyone when you get drunk?" she says. Kaito listens to Setsuna and he starts to walk home.
I slide to the ground and before my head hits the ground, I feel Setsuna rush over to me and catch my head in her hands. I glance at her out of the corner of my eyes before my vision blacks out.
Setsuna gasps.
"It's you! Everyone thought you were dead…" she says.
