I still think that even if the narrative *was* about a person who was caught in a moment lonely/sad introspection about not having a partner, during a quiet evening by themselves, it's not a crime to depict that. Though you seem to think strongly that it is quite immoral and/or somehow oppressive(?) to do so.

...Which I suppose, as a girl who's had moments of sad/lonely introspection during times when I had no romantic partner, as a girl who is no less human for it, as a girl who no less stronger for it, as a girl who appreciates artful depictions of moments, emotions, etc that I can relate to (whether painted by a man or a woman), I'd have to agree to disagree with you on that one. I'm not sure what else can be said beyond that :9
Cheers.

I wouldn't say it's immoral by any means, but if the artist was implying something along the lines of all single people are always like this (it's now apparent that isn't the case), that would be troubling. Plus, it would be easier to understand if she was upset over losing a significant other (which she apparently is, I now realize; it was just unclear at first) instead of moping about not having one to begin with. There are tons of people out there who seem to think being single in and of itself is the worst possible fate in the world. Their complaints have nothing to do with loss or grief, but with petty jealousy, self-pity, and bitterness. They're desperate for others to love them because they fail to love themselves. That's the first impression I got of this girl, and the fact that the artist portrayed her in a non-humorous light was a big turn-off in that moment. As a character creator, that sort of thing bugs me to no end; kind of like the mind-boggling fact that Bella Swan is supposed to be someone we can relate to. But it seems I was mistaken about this girl's character, which is a huge relief.

Painted Bees.. that was actually my storyline.. I originally wanted to title it something like.. from in a relationship to single...but thought it was too long, so I opted for a shorter version... Status:single.. I thought it would imply that she just went through a breakup and that it was not a happy one.

I like the fact that you read almost exactly what I had in mind.. you just made me smile..and the fact that you get the point about projecting your own emotions in my images makes me even more happy.
Thank you so much!

I think you are indeed reading too much into it... I myself am single and not desperate to get a bf and I also find people who over-dramatize their relationships (especially those who haven't even finished going through puberty) quite annoying... But being so harsh on Mr. Campion for creating a concept you consider cliche it's unfair. I'm sure he wasn't on a mission to prove a point about single people or manipulate them into seeing happiness through his perspective or shame them into rushing to find a partner... even his other drawings are not meant to militate for anything... he's simply painting what he likes, what he experiences and whatever emotions he wants to share with the world, and that so happens to be massively influenced by his family life because that is where he finds his strongest emotions and inspiration. It's like you're offended by people who are happy. You're happy to be single, he is happy to be married.

Mr. Campion I love your work and I am so happy to rest my eyes upon your work which always emanates a peaceful light.

I'm sure he wasn't either, but sometimes these things occur subconsciously, when we imply things we didn't intend to imply. I'm not saying he's doing it on purpose; just pointing out some ideas that maybe he wasn't aware of.

Offended by happy people? Girl please. If that were the case, I'd be blowing up the rest of his gallery with "OMG HOW DARE YOU LEAD A FULFILLING LIFE". I'm just making sure he doesn't think that's the only way to be happy. I'd just like to see more depictions (in general) of content, explicitly single people. I feel like our society places too much emphasis on finding a significant other and raising a family as the default "happy ending" in everyone's life. Just look at the end of the majority of fairy tale movies: What happens? The princess gets her man. One thing I liked about Brave (though it didn't deserve the Oscar) was that it focused on the mother-daughter relationship instead of a romantic one, and the princess stayed single at the end, free to take her time and choose a husband when she's ready. Plus, married couples get more bureaucratic benefits than singles do. Kinda went off on a tangent there, but hopefully you get my point anyway.
