Description
British test shows that anything below 250mm of armor on warship is way too ineffective to actually create it. That created idea "All or nothing" In short, if armor can protect ship from fire from other battleship, there should be at least 300mm of homogeneous armor. Of course if we not dig deeper into details; that much of armor may still be not enough against larger calibres, but has enough of power to deflect them if they are angled.Otherwise, there is no reason in putting armor in that place at all, as it will be penetrated anyway and will only add unnecessary weight to whole design.
So was Bayern a good desin?
The answer was: It was good shooting platform, but for sure not good battleship. Bayern was stable ship, with good fire rate, but has problem with survivability and what was most problematic; it was slow and badly designed in terms armor placement.
The worst part of it that Germans do not learn their lessons from WW I and Bismarck somehow inherit most of Bayern class flaws.
