Description
Woah, I drew something non-furry! You can all thank ~StarDragonBlue for this.Have mercy.
Nothing to see under that scrap of fabric she's wearing. Insects don't have... Well, anything there. I put the fabric there for the aesthetics and while coloring, tested a technique for patterned cloth. Oh, and that's jewelry on her neck, metal rings.
Huge thank-you to ~nosredna1313 for tweaking the scan for me!
The tree boughs in the backdrop are crap. =/ You don't have to tell me. Tried something new there that I won't be trying again. The backdrop sky got all grained-up in the scan, too.
Sakura Pigma Micron, Staedtler Triplus Fineliners, Prismacolor markers.

I'm working on a non-morphic pic now. And I'll actually be drawing a human eventually, for an art trade. I avoid drawing humans simply because I don't think we're interesting creatures. Obviously, though, I enjoy many human traits or else I wouldn't be an anthro artist!

This is really good... I never expected any insect anthro to be so pretty, actually... I tried earlier to draw the praying mantis from my anthro challenge list, but it just looked really weird...O.o Yours is soooo cool, the anatomy and colors are great, and the background is simple but pretty, and fits the mantis really good ^^

Thanks! It helps that I used to have one of these insects for a pet- They already seem very human to me because of that. I just wish I'd gone with six limbs instead of four.
Good luck with your mantis!

And thanks for the comment. The 10 Anthro Challenge is very fun, at least to me. I would never, ever have drawn a bug anthro otherwise...

Oh, the limb and body is close to the insect's ones, I haven't try the non mammalian anthro insects yet(I add hair and fur). then I guess the six-limb will go well with it. on that case, there are some ways to draw anthro insects. the anthro insects I've seen have 4 arms and 2 feet, or 2 arms and 4 feet. the latter become like centaur.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Peachfuzz In reply to Nekomarunosuke [2007-10-28 17:25:42 +0000 UTC]
I briefly considered a centaur-like approach to six limbs, but I became afraid and went with four limbs. I reall wish I'd done six.
Actually, furry bees make sense, because bees are fuzzy! Spiny stick insects done have any hairs so I didn't think it would be fitting to add fur. They do have spikes, though, so I used those instead of hair.

It's so pretty!!!! it's a gorgeous looking antro insect and wow, it wants to make me try leopard gecko anthro again. I lovehow the color of the sky almost seems reflected on her yellow-green exo-skeleton.
That tiny cloth made me laugh for a second until I read your description XD (hooray for aesthetics)always stunning work.

Peachfuzz In reply to andy15333 [2007-10-28 17:11:02 +0000 UTC]
Thanks a ton! I wanted to point out that bit about the cloth in my description so people wouldn't think I was being dodgy.
Even though nothing is there on an insect, I still felt somehow dirty leaving that area uncovered.
I love leopard geckos! Do draw one some time! They don't get nearly enough love in the anthro loop. Few animals do other than wolves, felines, foxes, and hedgehogs...

WOW It is so damn pretty and good looking!!
It really came out so elegant and beautiful!
It is very rare to find anthro insect, and even more rare to find them looking cute and ...uh, sweet (?) I want to pet her *petpetpet*
Anyways, I love the colours you used for this piece!
I love greens, and they go well with the character! Finally, I admire the detail you have put on the character...must fave this piece.

I petted my spiny stick insect all the time. I don't think Gwendolyn liked it but it felt nice gently running my fingers over her spines.
Thanks so much, Psamophis! I was afraid that I made her evil-looking without intending to, so I'm glad that she's coming off cute and sweet like I wanted her to be.

Hey...this looks VERY nice. Lots of detail and the expression in the face looks great. The head and the tail are especially interesting to look at. The background has some nice depth as well. How long did this take you? I emailed you an adjusted image based on your complaints of the warmth of the picture...hope it's more to your liking. I also downloaded GIMP, but haven't really gotten the time to mess around with it yet...though I will soon.

Woah! You've done it again! Your tweaked version is borderline perfect. I just had to replace my scan with your image. <3 Would you say that my scan was a little better this time, though? I sat there and messed with levels for about ten minutes.
Thanks so much for the kindly comment, as well! I've been working on this for about three weeks off and on, but by actual time spent I'd say only about 7 hours. The original is 6.5 by 10 inches, pretty small.

WOAH! This is one of the most impeccably well detailed characters I ever seen you draw, like your friend Snowflurrycat said. She has a lot of personality just from this one picture, I love to see more of her! Especially in the comic, as long as she stays away from my hedgy Sam... you know how I feel about stick insects...
What did you name her?
Also that spit of cloth looks awesome too, I might have to steal patterning like that.

Woah, thanks. I think that's the nicest thing you've ever said about my work!
No name. She's just a random bug person for my 10 Anthro Challenge. I'm thinking I'm going to have to draw more bug anthros some day, though. And you know how I love stick insects!
I wonder how you'll pull of the patterned texture with pencils? You know I can't work with anything but markers.

Wow, you really did a great job with her! You might be annoyed at some details like the background foliage, but they vanish in favor of the grace and plausibility of the insect anthro. She's an anthro, giving her four limbs instead of six is the anthro part. Other than that there isn't much about her other than her eyes that isn't spiny stick insect!
I think she's close enough to count for a mantid. Beautifully done. You are getting so good at these anthros!
Hehehe, do a sabertooth cat one for me sometime. Any of the sabertooths. Smilodon populator (the biggest), Machairodon, Barbourofelis... I'm rereading The Big Cats and their Fossil Relatives again and thinking I've got to see this in one of your anthros. Maybe a male one maned like a lion?

This is just... wow! I didn't even know, that there are insect anthrosanyway! i havenever considered drawing an insect like that. But she looks somehow sweet, compared to the original! *laughs* I really love her eyes, because they are so friendly, and not scary.^^The only asociation I have with mantis are all somehow horror like, and it is so fresh and delightful not to see them as monsters! And I really love those bright yellow shadings on her ..skin?
Ican reallyunderstand, why you didn't like to draw her an additional pair of arms. i guess, it would have made her appaer weird.
Really,wonderful done!

You're too nice to me! Thank you so much! My pet Gwendolyn, who was one of these insects, grew to be five inches long. People were really afraid of her but Gwendolyn was very gentle and would drink water out of the palm of my hand, and take leaves from my fingers.
They're sweet creatures if you don't let their appearances scare you. Because of Gwendolyn, these insects already seemed somewhat human to me, and that made this piece easier.
The only other person I can think of who does insect anthros is ~Nekomarunosuke . His bee anthros are adorable!

I really like looking at insects, but Imust admid, that I am a little scared, when they are not behind some glas...
Oh, i had a look.^^There should be more of that! *laughs* I guess a butterfly would be such a beautiful anthro as well. or a fluffy moth.^^

Peachfuzz In reply to Tabby-chan [2007-10-28 16:50:16 +0000 UTC]
This type of insect is purely vegetarian and doesn't have the mouthparts to bite anyone. So even though they get really big and they look scary, they're absolutely harmless. And adorable to bug enthusiasts like me! I would get another one in a heartbeat, except that it makes me sad to bond with a pet that only lives for 10 months to a year.
