Description

Several Space Marine legions had grown to a size of over 800,000 Astartes by the second century of the Great Crusade. These included the Black Knights, Ultramarines, Lunar Templars, Steel Wardens, Dawn Angels, Imperial Heralds, Imperial Fists, Kashindan, and Hydra Legion. A new, larger legion unit, the Ultramarion chapter, was formed to organize these forces. Developed by the Ultramarines, it was adopted by many other legions of similar size.

These Ultramarion chapters replaced traditional chapters, alternatively designated as “great companies,” “harrows,” “millennials,” etc., depending on each legion’s culture. They were initially composed of roughly 1,000 Legionnaires. The Ultramarion chapter, in comparison, is made of ten companies, each with one to two thousand Marines in a company.

The Legiones Astartes began designing and building new warships to accommodate larger chapters and companies. The results of this effort include heavy battle barges and strike cruisers of varying sizes.

Developed by the Ultramarines to fill the gap between battle barges and assault cruisers in troop-carrying capacity and firepower, heavy assault cruisers are called in by the legions when they need more firepower is required. A single heavy Strike Cruiser is more than enough to quell a rebellious planet.

Heavy Strike Cruisers can carry up to two battle companies of Space Marines (160 to 400 Legionaries) and their equipment. They are primarily used for rapid deployment. They are often the first to arrive in the orbit of a threatened planet. Within forty minutes of their arrival, they can deploy their cargo.

The armament of a heavy strike cruiser is comparable to that of an Imperial heavy cruiser. However, the heavy strike cruiser omits lance weaponry in favor of three turret-mounted mass drivers to deliver punishing orbital bombardments.

Heavy strike cruisers can launch fourteen Thunderhawk gunships or eight Stormbirds from their flight deck.

Heavy strike cruisers are used as flagships for legion forces when battle barges are not required in mass deployments.

In the 11th legions order of battle, each Grand Company has five heavy strike cruisers, with a total of fifty in a chapter.

Named for Mount Chokai on Nippon, the heavy strike cruiser Chokai (鳥海) was one of the first heavy strike cruisers employed by the Kashindan. The ritual dagger, or phurba, signifies participation in three victories and the destruction of the triple poisons of ignorance, greed, and delusion that impede spiritual progress. The red eyes on the ship's bow evoke ancient warships that once patrolled the now-vanished Mediterranean Sea of Terra and the legion's close association with the Imperial Nipponese Family.
