Description
Another young hero suggested by the ‘golden age’ of comics. In this case, the inspiration was the short-lived superhero Golden Lad (1945–1946, Spark Publications), created by Joseph Greene and Mort Meskin. This young super-hero obtained the standard set of super-powers (strength, speed, flight, invulnerability) from the Heart of Gold, a magical Azetc artifact created for a Spaniard who had refused to participate in atrocities against the native people. Golden Lad was Tommy Preston, a young blond boy who was inexplicably not recognized when he became Golden Lad. I have re-imagined him as a young Hispanic lad, Armando Diaz, who becomes ‘Deloro’ by means of a similar heirloom. This is partly because I think that such a character can be more interesting then yet another white-bread hero, and partly because of the Mexican history of the original character’s magical artifact.
