Description Heads. I draw them. Hopefully, so do you.

Someone asked for this. I've never made a tutorial before, and this one is too long. I can't imagine that this will help anyone, but here you go. HEADS. Mmmyup.

You should all feel awesome after seeing the crappy way I draw heads XD

Here are some other head tutorials by artists I admire that you should also look at:

YOUR DON IS SO CUTE

I enjoy seeing artists think about how they're going to interpret a character I do so much of it and think I'm like the biggest uber geek ever XD

I thought he turned out pretty cute Since he is tall and skinny in my fanon, I think this face suits him

We're both geeks, then XD

I might upload a "this is why I draw heads the way I do" drawing thing XD I have an explanation for every feature. It might help others learn how to go about creating a "style"

Pimpypants In reply to prefight-DONUT [2010-03-10 18:38:59 +0000 UTC]

haha, I put a link to your heads tut in my comment XD

Yeah, I was thinking that this one wasn't exactly thorough or really right for consistently drawing them, since I drew him facing forward and hardly ever do that, and I was considering doing a part 2.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

prefight-DONUT In reply to Pimpypants [2010-03-11 02:00:41 +0000 UTC]

It's good to start off with a straight on view since it's probably the hardest angle to get right XD If it's not symmetrical, it looks like caca.

A part 2 would be cool to see I wanna see how you draw Mikey and Leo!

Pimpypants In reply to prefight-DONUT [2010-03-11 07:01:31 +0000 UTC]

If I did a part two I'd probably continue using Don. But Mike I've already got pretty much down. It's Leo I'm most worried about.

Eh, I'll figure him out XD

AWESOME, thanks!!! It has made me realise why my heads are so squat -- I try and draw everything inside the circle and don't let the chin have its own space and that's such an elementary thing. I flip too. L di V knew what he was talking about

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Pimpypants In reply to artisticrainey [2010-03-10 17:19:57 +0000 UTC]

I think the way I draw them helps me with a lot of things - like when the character is talking, the chin has the freedom to move up and down. The top inside the circle will always stay the same except for the eyes and eyebrow, but their location is the same.

I'm glad this was helpful

It was! I'm trying to apply some of your techniques to a new bust and then I going to play around with different head shapes. Thanks!

I was a nerdy child. When I started liking TMNT I started to read a lot about Renaissance painters, and ended up reading Leonardo's notebooks XD

This is really informative. I can't draw sticks but, the way you showed things here, I think I could give this a try and it not be a complete fail, lol.

You're very thorough and precise in your teaching. ^_^

Pimpypants In reply to haking17 [2010-03-10 17:26:45 +0000 UTC]

Am I? XD I was like "I DON'T KNOW WHAT I'M DOING ACK!" and I think I wrote too much, but I was trying to make a few points. I like details, and coloring Raph apple green and changing his mask to red doesn't automatically turn him into a Leo, IMO. I hate seeing people bang out new characters like there's no tomorrow by re-coloring the same character with different colors and giving them different hair.

I'd really like people to think about these things a little bit more.

haking17 In reply to Pimpypants [2010-03-11 00:06:02 +0000 UTC]

I didn't think it was too 'wordy'. Of course, I learn better when as much is spelled out for me as possible. XD

You make some really cool points about lining up the eyes to the smile. I'd never considered that before but it made so much sense. And, I like how you describe giving a pic 'volume'. I realized that it's the 'volume' affect that draws me to certain pics; I just didn't realize what it was, lol.

I think anyone who is really serious about their art should definitely take what you said in consideration.

Pimpypants In reply to haking17 [2010-03-11 00:47:20 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thanks for saying so. I always feel sheepish putting something like this up because I really, really am just making things up as I go along.

I like very stylized drawings, but I also really love realism and lush looking art. I like seeing the flesh interact with surroundings, which you don't get a lot of with cartoons.

A really great tutorial!
I love how you put plenty of your own style into it while keeping it basic, most people try to avoid this but that just makes it confusing. The basic anatomy is useful to anybody, along with the tips, and the ending result is perfect. Awesome, Pimpy!

Aww, thank you :3 I hope it's helpful to someone! I didn't really think there was much to it and I am pretty sure I draw way too much XD
