Description
In late 1977, the Philippine government purchased 35 secondhand U.S. Navy F-8Hs that were stored at Davis-Monthan AFB in Arizona. Twenty-five of them were refurbished by Vought and the remaining 10 were used for spare parts. The Crusaders were manned by the 7th Tactical Fighter Squadron at Basa Air Base and were mostly used for intercepting Soviet bombers. With the still remain and everyday intrusion of Soviet bombers, both Philippine and US government petitioned its makers, Vought, to keep maintain its existing F-8 fleet operational. With the aid of Raytheon they began a 10 year upgrade program using available hardware from already existing aircraft in the 1990s. The engine is a GE F110-400 the radar is AN/APG-65. The excellent performance of the F-8s convinced the Filipino government to keep the fighters as a Quick Reaction asset, due to the demonstration of taking on maurauding PLAAF warplane during the 1999 incident.
However; in 2019, with its obsolescence, they were slowly replaced with the modern F/A-18E/F Super Hornets.
Thank you SILVER-70CHEV for some extra ideas and as well for modern camouflage scheme. Salamat po!!
