Aah ok, a little wider than standard (1.43m) then.Β

Nice that you picked up on how I was working that out, hehe.

Btw, there are many various railway gauge standards in the world!Β

Oh, I know. I just don't know of too many "full size" railways that don't use standard gauge (Russia and Moldova excepted)

All ex-USSR countries use 1520 mm gauge, not just Russia and Moldova. Ukraine, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Countries of Central Asia, Countries of Caucasus, and even Baltic Countries. Plus Mongolia.Β

And Finland has 1524 mm gauge which is a bit silly, but there you go.

In the USSR they changed the gauge from 1524 to 1520 in 1980-s. I have no idea what was the purpose of that work, but it was done.Β

Puzzles me too, but... again, there you go. Weird things happen. I know that we had that gauge because 1) former part of Russia 'till 1917 (there were some narrow-gauge places as well and stretches of standard gauge areas by harbors & customs), 2) post-WWII we were busy transporting war reparation payments to Soviet Union via railroad and retaining matching gauge was good for that and 3) the peace agreement we made had a clause of having X amount of railroad in certain areas, IIRC, including a case for gauge.

Poland also was a part of Russian Empire. I wonder what gauge they used historically, but now it is the standard gauge. Western Ukraine was a part of Poland after 1918 and till 1939. I also have no idea what gauge was used there during that period... (And before, certain parts of Western Ukraine belonged to Austrian Empire - most tunnels across the Carpathians were builtΒ In the days of Franz Josef)

Actually, I believe instead of reconstruction of our old railways in Ukraine it would be reasonable to construct a modern high-speed railway with standard gauge from West to East (say, to Kharkov via Kiev)... Β

Aah ok. I was not aware of that. Very interesting.Β
