Quite a captivating potrait shot! Making the background B&W is a nice effect; makes it look like you used a higher aperture value. The expression of the dog is stunning: somehow wise, suspicious and intrigued all at the same time. The cropping is perfect (since losing that cross would suck).

It's really great to see work of this quality once in awhile.
