Description
(nat-TAHN)On another Earth, an additional meteor event that poisoned the air forced the ancestors of early man to the shorelines. Thanks to a preemptive wave of Astral energy eons before the Astral Awakening, morphic resonance caused rapid evolution of the ape descendants to become amphibious, mimicking the traits of sea life around them to learn how to survive in water as easily as they once did on lands. By the time the air had cleaned up, intelligent life had irreversibly taken on an aquatic way of life, gaining most of their sustenance from the bounty of the sea and often spending their whole lives underwater, venturing to land for leisure, exercise and resources more than anything. The deeper they settled, the more durable their bodies grew to withstand both the high pressure of the ocean depths and retaining their ability to walk on land. By the time the Astral Awakening occurred, the Natan were able to literally miss a great majority of it in the early days by simply having never made settlements on land past any body of water. But it was only a matter of time as the earthquakes and more aquatic Great Beasts appeared, pushing the Natan deeper and deeper into the darkness. Suddenly, whole settlements started disappearing out of nowhere. These settlements would awaken in an unfamiliar ocean, and as they ventured to the surface found a new world, inhabited by different intelligent life. They added their strength to the collective neo-races to take the new planet back from the Great Beasts.
Like the Faunin, the Natan come in as many varieties as there is sea life, and in fact the diversity is such that a popular saying is 'no two Natan will ever look alike'. Unlike the Faunin, when Natan have children they easily take on traits from both parents. Hair, as tendrils, flaps, or follicles, is still present in many females, as they have retained an evolutionary function: baby Natan will cling to their mother's hair while traveling underwater, or hide within it to escape the view of predators. The one unifying feature of the Natan is their shiny black eyes that allow them to see in murky waters and even darkness. They are more sensitive to bright lights than other neo-races. The Natan are the longest-lived of the neo-races, able to reach as high as 200 years of age depending on their health and time living in water vs on land. As Natan reach the hundreds, their marine life traits start to grow more apparent. Their size also increases over the years, and by the end of their lifecycle they can be three times the usual humanoid size. In regards to their amphibious nature and despite the beliefs of some, Natan can live on dry land without requiring even a shower for several days. But needless to say, their condition worsens the longer they would keep this up, and Natan are always healthiest with a bottle of water by their side and a daily bath before they go to sleep. Some Natan sleep in specialized tubs, but sleeping on regular beds is still possible (albeit these beds are often most comfortable if waterproof). Needless to say, Natan prefer humid environments when possible.
Natan culture encourages forming symbiotic relationships with people outside of your usual social groups. However, Natan also like to be challenged by their peers, from playful ribbing to honest criticism, believing that such practices help temper and sharpen the minds of those they care for. A Natan will grow bored with someone who does not find ways to challenge them. This results in a confusing dichotomy for other neo-races as Natan come off as both overly friendly and overly antagonistic. Indeed, thanks to the ways their culture differ from the other neo-races by the nature of their environment, Natan are considered the most alien of the neo-races and have the most trouble forming close bonds with others that are not privy to or accepting of their ways.
Due to the poor state of the ocean by the time the Natan arrived on the scene, a longstanding negative sentiment against humans as careless and ignorant has persisted to this day.
Natan society is matriarchal. Women hold the highest offices of power in their governing body, and it is women who tend to lead courting relationships. As forward as Natan can be, they have gained further uncharitable reputations from other races.
The fluid-minded Natan are gifted in forming Astral Drifts that alter the nature of their personal Aura into to take on other properties, such as generating electric fields.
