Description YAY, JUMPING ON THE BANDWAGON

okay, two things

1) I don't really get why people are merging these two to be the same character, when in the past people have insisted two ponies are different even if they're exactly the same in every way except for eye color, or a missing horn, or whatever. But then you get two ponies with different colors and different hair styles and then suddenly everyone's saying they're the same pony? Can you at least be consistent?

2) Since when have people ever paid attention to merch before? Daisy's toy is called Flower Wishes, and yet nobody calls her that. If everything hasbro made would be treated as canon, we'd have pinkie in diapers, a very out of character pink celestia, applebloom and scootaloo with swapped names, flutterby, etc etc

Golden Harvest on the other hand is just plain silly!

This deviation isn't in the 14 search results for Lyra Heartstrings when one searches deviantART. You should add the missing keywords.

I fail to understand the logical processes required to consider a Twilight Sparkle palette swap the same character as an incidental mint green unicorn (with a completely different vector) from the show. But evidently, in the minds of some said jumps happen.

Love the picture, though. Fav'd.

I personally love the idea that Heartstrings is her last name.

But yeah the merch is not canon at all. I mean for Luna's sake bronies, if you consider the merch canon then that means AJ has an ugly ass pink truck an Pinkie Pie has a car... a car. Do you really want to trust her behind the wheel?

I like your Strawmen.

Addressing your second point here, no one supporting the name Heartstrings thinks that the toys take precedence to the show. Nor do they think that the toys actually take much precedence at all. Sure, Daisy's toy is called "Flower Wishes" but she's been given a name on the show that supersedes it.

Toys are simply considered a better source then fanon.

On your first point, while Heartstrings card art doesn't match her appearance in the show, neither does her toy match the card. The toy itself gets the colors pretty much as right as one could expect, to the point where it's obviously not simply coincidence.

If we're going to argue toys then I hereby decree that Cheerilee is not actually "Cheerilee" because she hasn't been called that in the show. That's just the name on her toy that doesn't even have the same Cutie Mark.

And Fluttershy isn't actually Fluttershy because her colors are slightly off and she has Rainbow Dash's hairstyle.

Because that's how it works.

All hail "Flower Smiles" and "Pony with the same name and similar colors to Fluttershy but actually is completely different"!

This is also the same company that makes a pink celestia and then puts white celestia art on the box, so this at least isn't the first time it's happened

I'm fairly sure someone on the show has said "miss cheerliee" at some point

asemd7 In reply to Pyritie [2011-11-05 03:37:59 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but only recently. And never in such a way that it was perfectly 100% clear who they were referring to if I decided to be in denial about it.

And that was only as of Season 2. She had no name in the show before that. We accepted her as Cheerilee because that's what the toy said.

"Lyra" technically has no name whatsoever if we discount the toys evidence completely.

So if we imagine it as it truly is, the facts of the matter are that a nameless background Pony was given a name on a toy made by the same company that makes the show.

In such circumstances it seems logical to adopt the toy name for the pony unless it gets contradicted later. And that is how we would behave if people with no relation to the show at all hadn't made up a name.

To me Fanon is something to be completely disregarded when possible when it comes to such matters. It's fun and helps to fill in gaps, but generally anything else is superior "Gap-filler" material. Fanon shouldn't even be considered to exist in these matters.

And I tend to think Fanon should be able to easily adjust to changes, mostly because the chances are that contradictions will come and becoming too attached will just make changing harder. When I see the Fanon actively resisting change it just feels wrong, like it isn't something that can deal with the change that could quite easily come.

So even if Heartstrings isn't proper "Cartoon Canon" I feel it should be accepted(for now) on the basis of it keeping the fanon flexible and being the less fanon source. Some sort of metaphor about a reed letting the wind blow it around compared to an oak that doesn't and is eventually broken by the wind comes to mind.

Heartstrings actually fits better anyways because she does tend to be rather emotionally expressive.

Kaijyuu In reply to asemd7 [2011-11-05 01:25:23 +0000 UTC]

Considered a better source by who? Idiots, sure!

There's no evidence of applejack NOT owning a pink truck, yet everyone with a brain realizes it's ridiculous.

Also of note, Cheerilee's been called Cheerilee *twice* now in the show. At least get your facts straight.

Finally, call the background ponies whatever you want. If you like the toy names, there's no reason you shouldn't use them. Toys are not canon, nor remotely "better" than fanon. Not worse either, of course, since the fact of the matter is, only the show itself has any bearing whatsoever on canon. Period.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

asemd7 In reply to Kaijyuu [2011-11-05 01:57:37 +0000 UTC]

I don't believe she's been called Cheerilee directly to her face. A Cheerilee has been mentioned to exist, but there is no solid evidence that they're the same exact pony if we completely throw out what the toys have to say about anything.

Now you could say that Fanon is surely a more valid source then people actually connected to the show, if only distantly. But that's a bit more idiotic then saying it's the other way around.

Sure, toy stuff is separate from the show for the most part, but it's not as separate from it as Fanon is.

We've accepted less valid sources as canon when they've fit what we wanted them to.

Anyhow, a character name is different from a truck that actually conflicts with the established technological development of the setting.

As Fanon has no real validity one could say that the best way to explain this situation is as a character who has never been named in the show, and was previously completely nameless, has now received a toy that does indeed have a name.

I suppose we could still be arguing over the idea that the pony could still be considered to be nameless or not, as that's all we're really doing. Not which name is more valid, but whether or not she has one at all.

Regarding the Cheerilee example, the first time she's mentioned by name (Lesson Zero), Spike says that they returned the chalkboard to Cheerilee and on the checklist is a chalkboard with an A+. I mean, you can argue that it's not clear cut, but the scene indicates that the pony Spike is referring to may be a teacher and there is only one established teacher in Ponyville thus far.

I have to disagree with you because from the pics that I've seen of the figure is that the color on the toy and the color on the card are remarkably deferent. Now it could be lighting or it could be that they were going to go with a new pony and than decided on making it Lyra.
