Description ‘Oh my gosh eet’s been a year! Een entire year!’ Jean Jacques looked into his bedroom mirror. The hunchback couldn’t help but clasp his hands and grin at his reflection. He had been dating the love of his life, met by accident, for exactly one year. He grinned proudly and almost glowed with blush. He had long moved past Clyde, or so he hoped. He was, as he would say, ‘absolutely head over heels een amour with monsieur Griffon.’
He took a comb, deciding he didn’t have much time in the bathroom before his roommate, Leo, decided to come in. The red-headed invisible boy had an awful tendency to do that, since they all had to share a bathroom in this house. His other roommate, Clyde the vampire, was pretty good about it, but Leo was just a pain. He was always looking to get JJ.
Running the comb through his hair, the Frenchman began to hum. For some reason, the only thing that came to mind was Swanee River. He smiled sweetly and the humming became a quiet solo. He didn’t even notice the black dress shirt and green pants appearing behind him as he reached down to get a dab of cologne. “Hey loverboy!” Leo called, causing the shorter man to scream a little and grab his heart. “My turn!” He began shoving, guiding a shocked and barely resistant JJ out of the bathroom. “You took too long.” Was the last thing he heard before the door was slammed.
He flew around and beat on the door with a meaty fist. “Leo I wasn’t finished! Let me een!”
“No way, it’s my turn!” The other boy said. You could just hear the cold smirk on his face as the shower water began to run.
JJ growled and bit his lip. “May I at LEAST he my pants?” He hissed.
“Can’t hear you, I’m in the shower!” The voice called with a snark. JJ was steaming, and he took a deep breath. He could get some of his other dress pants. But he did still need hair gel, cologne, and the brush his teeth. He sighed softly and licked his front teeth, which were not quite buck but did have a slight overbite. He still had an hour to get ready at least, right? That reminded him, he still needed to call and confirm their dinner plans.
He picked up the phone and dialed, smiling expectantly. Griffon picked up almost immediately. “Hey!” He smiled into his end of the phone, not that you could tell. Just like Leo he was invisible, but unlike the younger red-head he couldn’t control it. No relation, by the way. “What’s up JJ? Are you ready to come over?”
“Come over?” The hunchback frowned softly. He then smiled. “Oh! So we can meet before we go to dinner at Fleeming’s?” Flemming’s was a pretty top-dollar place, and they were great with steaks and French cuisine. It was one of JJ’s favorites, he thought he had told Griffon that was where he wanted to go for their anniversary dinner.
“That’s really expensive place?” Griffon sounded surprised. He could never afford a dinner there, and had thought that JJ’s passive mentioning of it were jokes. “I thought you were coming over? I have dinner cooked and I had candle light-“
“When did we decide this?” The Frenchman couldn’t help but demand.
“Last week when I said you should come over for our anniversary!” He snapped.
“I thought you meant after dinner!”
“I said I was making cake!”
“For after dinner!” JJ fumed. He then took a deep breath to compose himself. “What kind of cake?”
“I haven’t finished it yet, but chocolate.” The invisible man smiled softly.
JJ couldn’t help but stick his tongue out. “If you can, can you make eet vanilla instead? Do you like vanilla?”
‘Vanilla? Whoever heard of vanilla cake?’ Griffon couldn’t help but think. “Uh… I’ve never had it? Oh wait, you mean yellow?” He didn’t know what to say, and now he felt dumb. What did you say to vanilla cake? “Can’t we just have chocolate?”
“I guess…” JJ groaned inwardly. He sighed and smiled tiredly. “How about half vanilla, half chocolate?”
“I guess.” Griffon repeated. He smiled slightly. “Well, go ahead and get ready okay? The cake will be ready when you get here.”
He laughed. “All right. Eet will be a bit, since I have to wait on Leo to get out of the restroom.” His smile fell into a less than pleasant frown at this.
“Good luck with that.” The invisible man laughed. He knew about their constant fighting. He just wondered how it didn’t stress out Clyde.  Maybe it did? He just shrugged.
“Thanks. I love you.” JJ smiled sweetly, cheeks turning red, before he went back to getting ready. He went to his room to get Griffon’s gift, and pulled it out of its hiding place under the bed. He smiled tiredly and mentally patted himself on the back for getting him just the perfect gift. Then, looking around for any sign of Leo, he kissed his palm and placed it on the lid before pushing it back under the bed.  He got up to resume demanding that Leo let him into the bathroom. He found it, still locked, and growled.
Meanwhile Leo had snuck out with a key and locked the door behind him, having taken a spare key from Clyde long ago. He had hidden behind the door and waited until JJ was gone. He had a brilliant prank in mind. The boy opened his housemate’s drawers and began to sift through it. He knew something had to be here, they had spent too much time along in JJ’s room for it to not be….
And there it was! Leo grinned and pulled a pair of Bermuda shorts out, followed by a hideous Hawaii print shirt. “Well,” He chuckled. “I figure that someone who wears clothes as ugly as this to see his boyfriend must have many similar to it.” He undressed and slipped into the new outfit, hiding his clothes in the closet. Then Leo slipped out into the hall and downstairs, away from the others.
JJ sighed, and smiled at himself in the mirror. He took the cologne bottle from earlier and dabbed some onto his neck, collar bone, and cheeks. A touch behind the ear, here, there, and he was done. Not done getting ready, but done with the cologne. He still had to gel his hair, and tie his tie, and put on his jacket- and then he heard a knock at the front door.
“I’ve got it!” He called, knowing Clyde was out hunting. He hurried downstairs and unlocked the door, opening it. “Hello?”
“Hello JJ.” Leo smiled, mocking Griffon’s voice. “You’re not ready yet?”
“Ah…” He blushed angrily. “I said I would be there as soon as I was ready. Why are you early?”
“You’re sooo slow.” He rolled his eyes. “So I came to get you.”
JJ looked surprised, and angry. “We had just agreed I would be there! And why aren’t you dressed up! You said you had a suit!”
“Look,” Leo-Griffon pulled him into a hug, smirking to himself. “Why don’t you go tie your tie and we’ll go?”
“Who do you think I am?” JJ brushed him off. “You’re insulting me. What happened to you?” He snapped angrily.
“I just got tired of waiting on you,” The invisible man crossed his arms.
“Well then, you could have told me before our anniversary!” He snapped.
“Whatever.” The boy’s voice lapsed as he rolled his eyes, Leo himself never realizing it.
JJ’s eyes widened. “Leo you ass!” He tackled him. “You tried to trick me into breaking up with Griffon!” They began to fight, JJ fists flailing more than actually fighting. Griffon threw another punch, hitting JJ square in the chest. The hunchback fell back with an angry groan, but leaned forward again and slapped at the boy.
This fighting continued, becoming more of a cat fight than a boxing match. Leo had a busted lip and JJ had a cut over his forehead where the skin had split. They didn’t stop until Clyde landed in front of them, going from bat to human form. The vampire took his time looking confused and distressed, wondering why they were fighting and for how long this had been happening.
He groaned and took a few deep, unneeded breaths before grabbing them each by their collars. He could tell that the one dressed as Griffon was Leo because his face was red and had become visible, as it always did when he was upset. “What on earth are you two fighting over now?!” He snapped angrily.
JJ looked ready to cry, which was a pretty horrible look for a grown man. “Leo acted like Griffon and he was being a JERK!” He kicked before crossing his arms.
Clyde rolled his eyes. “Well then. You two can stop right now. JJ, go along and finish getting ready. Leo, stay away from him.”
Leo pouted angrily. “Fine.” He spat before charging out of the room.
JJ sighed. “Thank you Clyde.” He stood up, brushing himself off. The Frenchman was glad that he could finally leave for his date. The man went upstairs and dressed his wound, tightening his tie and brushing his hair up before taking a palmful of gel to it. JJ winked at himself playfully before grabbing the gift and jogging downstairs. It was show time.
~~~
JJ pulled up to the apartment in his cheap car, feeling a bit trashy. He knew that Griffon was only a little better off than him, but he still felt bad that he couldn’t pull up in a fancy Porsche of some sort. He got out, holding the gift cradled in his arms like a precious baby, and walked up the steps to knock.
Griffon opened the door and smiled. “Hey guy.” He kissed JJ’s cheek, and the hunchback turned red with blush. The glasses showed no emotion, but you could tell that he was smiling. “Our cake is ready. Do you like steak?”
“I love eet.” He sighed and leaned into another kiss. JJ snaked his hands around the waist of the suit Griffon was wearing and pulled him into a hug, sneaking in a fistful of his skinny partner’s bum.
Griffon chuckled and stepped back. “Whoa now, after dinner.” He backed away and showed his boyfriend to the table, where steaks, asparagus, and scalloped potatoes were waiting. He pulled a package of matches out of his jacket pocket and lit the candles, sitting down.
“Oh, wait!” JJ passed him the gift. “I got you this. I thought you would like it since… you know…” He blushed and motioned to the model cars that lined a shelf above the couch.
“Thank you.” He smiled and looked around. “Well let’s see what this baby is?” He tore the wrapping off. Inside was a 66 Mercedes SL, a lovely car that wasn’t yet in his collection, ready for him to build complete with the right paints. He looked up at JJ, and the other man felt the love in that look.
They finished dinner without interruption or fault, and Griffon got up to cut the cake. He returned empty handed. “Where ees it? Did it turn out alright amour?” JJ cocked his head to the side curiously.
Griffon shook his head. “It’s fine. But we can’t have any yet.”
“Why? Is eet still cooling?” He asked, starting to get up.
Griffon motioned a ‘no’ again and made JJ sit again. He reached into his pocket and produced a black velvet box. “We can’t have any until you say yes.”
JJ looked extremely confused. Then he caught on and looked down at Griffon in wonder. No wonder he couldn’t afford dinner at Flemmings, he had spent so much on a ring- he looked down to see it being slipped onto his finger. The hunchback pulled his boyfriend- fiancé- into a tight hug and sighed into his ear. “I’ll take that cake…”
