Description
“There is nothing wrong with the eye itseeeelf.” An LGM looked at his papers with a grin. “Just the way it’s set uuuup.” Renee looked at the little green man, confused and a bit worried. She was sitting on an examination table next to her dad, who had his arms crossed unhappily.“What do you mean by that?” Alan eyed the little alien. Half of the stuff they said never made any sense to him.
“The way the eye was put in to react with her braaain,” He replied, trying to make things more clear. “It gets readings from her body- heartbeat, nervous system, the wooorks. The reason her eye keeps shorting out is because it overloooads. She’s under some kind of pressure or mental tension, when she panics it causes a power suuurge.”
“So, what do we do?” Renee frowned. Just explaining the situation was never enough- she wanted a full, in-depth answer.
“Replacing the whole eye would be a good ideaaaa.” The LGM said. “But we would need something to monitor your stress levels and prevent another shoooort circuit. There is something we’ve been meaning to test out anywaaaay-“
“Whoa, whoa.” Alan cut him off rather sharply. “I want to know what this experimental thing is before you go sticking it into my little girl.”
“Dad, I’ll be okay, really-“ She tried to stop a rant from coming up.
“Tell me.” Alan looked down at the alien.
“We had no intention of not telling you what it doooes.” The LGM nodded a little pointedly. “Look over here.” He pointed to a small set of hair-thin wires on what looked like a coat hanger. “Nerve monitooor. All it does is take readings from important nerves so that a cyborg attachment, let’s say your eye,” He pointed at Renee. “Can be readied so it doesn’t experience a pooower surge and short out.”
“Well that doesn’t sound so bad.” Renee smiled. “Do I just wear it or something?”
“Renee, don’t ask that-“ Alan started. Whenever you asked a question with ‘is that it’ or ‘that doesn’t sound so bad’ in it, it always ended up being a lot worse than it sounded.
“Actually it has to be implanted surgically; Just skin-deep, it won’t change your appearance muuuch.” One promised. Renee lit up. She wasn’t too hot on the idea of implants but was glad it wouldn’t change her appearance if she agreed.
Alan’s brow furrowed. “So how would it work?”
“The main part would run along her back like sooo.” Another LGM jumped into the medical lecture, taking the nerve monitor system off its hook and using yet another of the little green men as an example. He ran it up the other’s back. “And branch out to wrap around the torso, stomach, and limbs.”
“Easy enough.” Renee nodded again.
“Then it will be connected to major nerves in the wriiists, ankles, and neeeck. It also has a heart monitor attachment, but it’s only slightly thicker.” One of the aliens hopped up on the table with Renee and pointed at the back of her neck with a wire. “And fiiinally it will be routed to the spinal cord. Naturally it will react with the eye, because of how it’s been connected.”
“And this won’t make me look different at all?” The girl smiled. Her dad knew when to trust the LGMs, and right now he did.
“For… the most part.” The little green man looked away.
“What’s it going to change?” Renee demanded. She was not pleased with the idea of the way she looked getting any different. She was happy enough with the eye, but wouldn’t tolerate anything else.
“Nooothing really.” The LGM smiled reassuringly. “We’ll just need braces on your ankles, wrists, and neck to keep the most important monitors from moving, and so we can access them eeeasily. It will look like you’re wearing silver jewelry.” He showed off a few of the bands. Renee was relieved. They really were small- just right to be fitted tight but comfortably and at most an inch wide.
“Aright. Everything checks out.” She looked at Alan again. “So, dad, what do you say?
“I say it sounds fine.” Alan nodded. “And I think we can get the same model for the eye. Maybe this time it will come in green.”
“Oh no.” Renee sat up immediately. Her eye may have been dead but the mind control still had its effects because of the operating chip. “I want it to stay red. Maybe we could keep the cover and chip to save some money?” The girl suggested hastily.
Alan gave her the oddest look but nodded tolerantly. “That would be cheaper. With the same model everything will fit and there’s nothing wrong with the chip. Good plan.” He said finally.
“Thanks daddy.” She smiled and giggled like a little kid, then looked back at the LGMs. “So, when are we doing this?”
“It would have to be tomooorrow.” The little alien said apologetically. “We’re all full todaaay.”
“That’s fine.” The girl nodded and wound her tail around the table’s leg. She jumped down and scolded her dad for a second. “Now, since you insisted on coming up here, you need to go catch up on your training.” He smiled and rolled his eyes- she acted as his timekeeper when they were up here.
“Alright, Alright.” He held up his hands in defeat. “To workouts!” He waved a finger in the air heroically and jogged out of the lab. Renee’s stomach growled unhappily and she agreed with it- it was grab some grub and help out XL time.
She had worked herself into a daily routine, not that she couldn’t do pretty much anything she wanted, it was just that Buzz had firmly told her on the first day she was to keep herself busy and out of trouble. It was only a suggestion, but she did it anyway. Get up, get ready, eat, help with XL’s deliveries, eat again, and so on until it was lights out. Occasionally path was broken when one or the other was busy.
Thinking of the working routine Renee smiled devilishly. She liked order, but loved chaos, especially when the two operated together. As long as she was at the top of it, of course. Of course when her dad graduated there would be a whole new order put into place, but for now this one was fine, they would all get one delightful day of chaos when all the cadets moved up to official rookie status- there would be a long ceremony that Renee and XL planned to skip out on, then an after party and prom-type thing that everyone had to attend. That was where she planned to make spending all this time hanging out with him worthwhile- she was going to ask the photocopier to go to the dance with her.
