Description
A couple of days ago, my grade's social studies class got a lesson on pity, sympathy, and empathy. It was thought provoking to learn about the difference between the three, and the positive impact empathy and connection have on people. We watched this video in class.Something the video calls attention to is the negative effects of "silver-lining", or when one tries to make someone feel better by showing them how their situation isn't as bad as it could be. There's always something worse. Had a rough diagnosis? At least you don't have cancer. Received a bad grade on a test? At least you have an education. Lost your job? Be thankful you ever had an income. There can always be an arguably "worse" situation. When this silver lining is mentioned, though, it degrades the sufferer's pain. Sometimes, it's best not to try to get someone to be grateful about their situation. Sometimes, it's important to put yourself in their shoes. Take their raincloud. Understanding is powerful.
